Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. is such an awesome name. Too bad he changed it to that Flight 93 crap.

And for an opposing view:

Tbh, you could rank him anywhere from #1-4 and make a good argument. I have him ranked third as well.

Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. was virtually unstoppable at UCLA. They stopped dunking to slow him down.

UCLA went 88-2 in the three seasons that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played with the Bruins. UCLA went undefeated in 1967, going 30-0 and winning the national championship, then 29-1 in each of the next two seasons

it frustrates me when people claim or speak on a guy they never actually watched. Like someone 25 years old saying Gale Sayers was the best running back of all time. It’s fine if someone born in 1940 says that, but someone born decades after he played just seems a little ridiculous

You can give compliments to a guy from long ago, but it’s not cool to rip him. He didn’t get to pick when he played

It's weird to me to rank players from different positions together. They are barely playing the same game. A Center and guard have little commonality. It's like comparing boxers from different weight classes. It's a futile debate, other than maybe who had the best career..

Need to look at the question with the context of his time.

Wilt Chamberlin, HAkeem Oulajowan(sic?), and Kareem, are to me the 3 best centers offensively at a time when getting paint touches was considered good offense.

Russell was best defensive center.
Moses Malone would be in the conversation as well.

I probably over rate Kareem because I am a Lakers fan.

You want the truth?

Russell doesn't belong in the same conversation with Wilt and Jabbar.

Sure, he was an excellent defensive player and won a bunch of championships under Auerbach and surrounded by excellent players when the league was smaller, but in no way, shape, or form was he the all around powerhouse that the other two names were.

Maybe not but IMO changing your name especially if you are a Junior is sort of a insult to your father. I don't know his specific situation I am just talk in general.

Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.

ETA: useless trivia for today...Kareem broke the all time scoring title in (of all places) Las Vegas. LINK

Wilt and Sampson… no shame there.

Ranking players is so hard, because some players are the best ever for a brief period, and others are great for a long time.

Kareem top 10. If I’m building a team, he might be on it, but there were so many great centers. I might take Olajuwon???

Kareem retired when I was 8, so I can’t recall ever seeing him play.

Why doesn't anyone ever mention Duncan? He is/was a Center. He is by far the best modern Center. His resume is just ridiculous. I don't know why he is always overlooked..

Sustained superior performance at the most important position in the game, as it was played then.
At center, either second behind Wilt, or first if you think Wilt played against 6'7" white guys.

Russell averaged a whopping 15 ppg in his career. Never averaged 20 in a season. Only twice averaged 17.

And Wilt averaged 30 and 28 head to head against him.

I tend to agree that Russell was not a top 3 center. He didn't have the skills of Kareem or Wilt and probably would have struggled against Olajuwan, Shaq and Moses Malone.

Strange how Oscar Robertson is so forgotten. Twenty years ago he made quite a few all-time 1st team lists.

I have Lebron 3rd behind Jordan and Kareem with Bird (4) and Magic (5) with Wilt (6) and then 7-10 could be in any order Duncan, Olajuwan, Oscar and Kobe.
