UF’s Jack Pyburn’s NIL demands

I think this pretty much sums up where College Football sits in 2024.
Jack Pyburn is a solid edge defender. Nothing elite but solid. He’s good against the run and he can occasionally make an impact rushing the passer. He’s a liability in pass coverage so more of a 1st & 2nd down type player. Allegedly, here were his “guarantees” he wanted.
-45K per month
-guaranteed starting position at OLB
-guaranteed to play on 3rd down
-more snaps in the rotation.
UF said no and now he’s in the portal.
Like wtf are doing here. Complete joke. Don’t blame Napier one bit for telling him to kick rocks.

It’s the unlimited transfer way more than NIL. They each make the other worse. But it’d be so much better if you could tie players down to at least three year contracts.
I mean if you want to get paid like other athletes fine, but then you need the team friendly rules that other sports leagues have as far as team control

And by going somewhere that will meet those demands, Pyburn will be forcing someone else to go into the portal as he’s been recruited over

Just because he asked doesn’t mean someone will give it to him.
I’m not in favor of restricting these guys movement, but maybe it should be if you enter the portal you have to leave. As of now, there’s no reason not to enter the portal and ask for the moon. Worst case, you just withdraw your name and go back to your current school

His agent really got picky. I would have left it at $45k/mo OBO.

All these kids that don’t make it to the pros are gonna be in for a heavy dose of reality when they have to find real jobs.

But they aren't paid like other athletes. That's the distinction. What you have in college football is like Pat Mahomes playing for KC but not actually being paid by KC. Instead, he's "paid" by State Farm...who is free to pay him whatever they want.

Those "team friendly" rules aren't just unilaterally implemented by the teams/leagues. The NFL, MLB, NBA, etc are ALL monopolies than cannot legally exist in the US without an antitrust exemption. The leagues get that antitrust exemption through collective bargaining between management/ownership and labor (i.e. the players). Those rules have all be negotiated and agreed to by both sides.

Imagine all the rock stars Deloitte missed out on
Top talent knows they’re top talent and demands premiums…

This is the schools’ and NCAA’s fault. Classify the players as employees and write buyouts into their contracts. It would stop a lot of this transfer shite, but the schools and NCAA were greedy.

Is there a link to this ?

You’re describing the legal or technical distinction that explains why the system currently works the way it works.
I understand that. Practically though it doesn’t work. Pro sports leagues have had a hundred years of experimentation and they all ended up in the same place. It’s the only way to have a viable “league” long term.
College sports has been forced via courts and legislation to essentially grant college athletes all of the rights of professionals, but no one is stepping up to the plate to begin having the hard conversations that professional style limits and responsibilities should be placed on them. And that’s everyone’s fault, NCAA, conferences, colleges, courts, state governments, federal government.

Along with the obvious red flags, this dude isn't a team player. All he is looking for at his next stop is tape for the scouts.

all of this.
NIL with unlimited transfers is insane.
Pay for play sure, but you have to at least ground the asset you are investing in.

I am willing to bet the kid will go somewhere (smaller school) to get the playing the time he wants but for less money. I would also bet that he never reaches his potential.
If you are having to make demands for playing time it already means you aren't worth what you are asking.
Is there a source for this, other than the money those are non-starters for any serious coach.

One thing I’ve always thought about is how awkward it must be to go back into the locker room for the guys who entered the portal, but never left.
frick that. I wouldn’t want those guys on my team anymore

Yep
NIL is fine but you cant be a free agent every year

Is the NCAA now unable to enforce the degree progress rules? I would think that those would stem the tide of transfers at least some, but it never seems to come up.
I wonder if academic eligibility at all is even policeable at this point.

You’re not understanding that CFB is a business and you’re looking at it from an emotional player’s perspective… all players look at the portal as a way to possibly “move up” and other players by and large support them

A lot of people are saying that may not be what his demands were - the agents release all sorts of stuff, like they have for decades now.
UF fans that have been around will remember Tank Black - he was such a problem that (iirc) Spurrier lobbied the state govt in FL to put some controls on agents and how they attempt to manipulate things and even entice players to violate NCAA rules.
These players claim they are "die-hard" and then announce transfers with the season still ongoing. Coaches should throw their stuff in a hefty and toss it on the sidewalk. It's absurd.
