Braves, Yankees, Cowboys, Lakers and Dodgers. The most valuable is the Cowboys, Yankees, Knicks, Warriors and Lakers

They still have one of the biggest and most loyal fan bases of any sports team on the planet, their logo is instantly recognizable, and they bring in huge ratings whenever they play in prime time.

Bammer has to be one considering college football is the second most popular sport in america

Yankees and Cowboys are in a tier of their own. Then Lakers. Then there is a gap where you could debate a bunch of teams.
I know you specifically said American sports, if you count Canadian teams in the NHL (which is an American owned league with a majority of teams being in the US) then the Maple Leafs are up there in the conversation for 4th or 5th probably.
I think the Packers are kind of overrated as a brand.
Dodgers, Red Sox, and Cubs are up there.
I think the Patriots were a few years ago, not really anymore.

In terms of recognition and airtime Jordan might be the #1 in the United States.
Granted people know who the Yankees and Lakers are but they only sell themselves. He's still everywhere 25 years after the end of his run.

Yankees
Cowboys
Lakers
...College has several iconic...but Alabama probably makes the most sense given their long history of success.

Ohio State's brand dwarfs Alabama...just go look at brand value. Ohio State is #1 followed by Texas at #2. Ohio State is a behemoth of a brand.

If you're talking popular worldwide and wanted to include college it's probably UCLA. They've done a LOT of "advertising" in China and India. They made UCLA a clothing brand to get their image out there and it's pretty successful.
