It’s crazy how quickly the sport has shifted since the mid 2000s. Those BCS bowls during that time were awesome. Rarely any opt outs and the teams were still trying their hardest to win.

I understand for outside fans that opt outs are lame to watch, but I like the young guys getting a chance to go make plays.

i.e. Harrison and Smith-Njigba in the Rose Bowl 2 years ago

Because during the BCS it was typical that several NC contenders were left out

With this playoff it’s more likely that NY6 bowls just have good/not elite teams

Primadonna opt outs and transfer portal also doesn’t help obviously

man, from 98 >conference realignment v1 >rematch of the game of the century, college football was so much fricking fun

granted i was 14-27 during that time, so it's nostalgia aided as well.

BCS got it right except for when the top 3 teams all had the same record. All the committee had to do was keep the BCS in place and make decisions in this scenario. The fact that they explicitly went with a subjective (fake) decision making process proves the system is intentionally corrupt.

About 2006 was the peak, with a gradual decline. The last 2 years it’s fell off a cliff.

I think, generally, this is the way to go. Having flexibility is a huge plus.

Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette started this trend of sitting out bowl games. They ruined the college football postseason like Kevin Garnett ruined college basketball.

I’ll go with 2006 Rose Bowl USC-Texas BCS title game as the ultimate high point of college football. Look at the BCS champs prior to that and their conference:

2005 Big 12
2004 PAC 12
2003 SEC / PAC 12
2002 Big 10
2001 Big East
2000 Big 12
1999 ACC
1998 SEC
1997 Big 10 / Big 12
1996 SEC
1995 Big 8

After 2005, it’s been sheer SEC domination.

Yeah, there were only four BCS bowl games so it used to be very difficult just to play in one. You either had to be a conference champion from one of the six power conferences or get one of the two at-large berths so there were great teams like 1998 Kansas State and 2001 Tennessee who couldn't even make it to one. So if you were fortunate enough to play in a BCS bowl, it was a huge deal.

Plus every game was aired on ABC. People keep saying there's little difference between games shown on ABC compared to ESPN because everybody has cable nowadays but that's definitely not the case. The vibes are completely off compared to the days when all the big postseason games were on OTA television. You could just sit down and watch all of the big bowl games on New Year's Day and not even have to change the channel. It's just different today and not in a good way.

Shoot, goes back way before the BCS. These youngins don’t know how good their dads had it.

The answer all along was a national championship game after the traditional bowls.
