Rafael Nadal: How come nobody says anything when female models earn more than male models?

The issue of equal prize money has been a regular topic of debate within the tennis community in recent years.

Although in the Grand Slam events there has been equal pay since 2007, there is a vast disparity in the prize money offered at women-only tournaments compared to men-only competitions.

And speaking in an interview with Italian magazine Io Donna, Nadal said it was not fair that women earned the same as men.

“It’s a comparison we shouldn’t even make,” he said.

“Female models earn more than male models and nobody says anything. Why? Because they have a larger following."

“In tennis too, who gathers a larger audience earns more.”

Exactly. Which is a big reason why they have a bigger following, which is Nadal's point. More people want to watch the fairer sex model. More people want to watch the more athletic sex do athletics. Makes sense that the market should pay them accordingly.

Nadal better watch out.

Facts and logic are racist and sexist.

Nah. It's a legitimate point he made and he backed it up with a question that the SJW's won't want to answer.

Well done Rafa

He's Spanish, he can get away with it. At the Madrid Masters 1000, they have models instead of ballkids. God bless them.

Remember all that backlash Johnny Mac got when he said Serena wouldn't be top 700 among the men?

How come nobody is mentioning that UTR -- the ranking system that has become highly influential in the junior ranks and is regarded across the board as a useful tool in rating players -- says that Serena is probably more like 1,700?

It’s silly that someone even has to say that. It’s so obvious why male athletes earn more, it’s a better product. SJW’s are the worst.

Rafa has won 11 Frenches, so he can take some liberties. But he is also right. I think the whole attempt to extend feminist principles to sport is absurd and probably counterproductive. It was like that minor snafu a while back where some contingent of people were giving McEnroe trouble for saying Serena was the best 'womens' player in tennis instead of just 'player'. She is terrific in the women's circuit, but she would probably lose to a lot of men's college players. McEnroe said something to this effect and caught some flak for it. Its a very strange neurosis of our current society that relatively uncontroversial statements such as that become 'indications' of injustice or something like that. It's less than ideal.

And even from a time on court perspective, at the slams at least, women play best of 3, men best of 5. Just on those grounds alone you could argue that the pay need not be the same. Not to mention the obvious fact that men's matches draw more viewers and are, generally, of a higher quality.

Is men’s tennis really that much more popular than women’s? There have been periods when it hasn’t been.
