She’s not being punished above and beyond. She’s being prosecuted according to their laws and by their sentences.
As an American, I don’t like their law on this but I can tell you that I’ve been to Russia 3 times and there was no chance of me breaking their laws while in that country. I was well aware of what would happen to me if I did and I obeyed their laws to avoid this type of situation. The same goes any time I travel outside the US to any other country.

She’s probably taken the same or more plenty of times.
She probably didn’t account for the political climate.
She definitely made a dumb mistake that shouldn’t rob her of a decade and even if I don’t like her I hope she finds a way home soon.
