They've largely backed off of peak 2020 summer of love nonsense.
I’m not sure that’s a reason for the perceived lack of interest in the NBA.
Up to about 2018, I was all in with the NBA. It was my favorite league to watch live. My best friend has season tix to the Nuggets, and he’s at the point where he only attends playoff games. Like most things, this one is complex.
Adam Silver may be the worst commish in sports. The game is no longer marketed to my demographic, and that’s ok. But he’s pretty much alienated that sector of the fanbase. Games seem almost gimmicky. No lead is safe. While one might find that as entertaining, I’d argue it makes 3/4 of the game meaningless.
Load management is a massive issue within the league, especially as it pertains to paying customers. I’ve wasted money on games where stars sat, and it sucks.
Late game fouling has been a problem since I’ve been watching, but it wouldn’t kill someone to maybe address ways to mitigate those dull moments.
The All-Star game is dead. Lack of player effort has effectively killed that weekend.
Increased emphasis on offense and analytics has made the game super predictable and less entertaining. That happened to baseball, but even Manfred has tried a couple of things.
Simply put…IMO the NBA is not a league that’s widely discussed around the office water cooler these days. It’s not really must-see TV unless it’s your team. Lots of things have turned certain fans off. I won’t brag about watching less. I wish I cared more, but outside of the Spurs and a couple of 4th quarters I stumble upon, I’m not interested.

It is a HUGE problem and the NBA players have negotiated their CBA to their advantage to the extent to where there is little that can be done to correct the issue - the players have most of the power and don't really care it seems, what the fans want.
Those kids who wait all year for certain players to come to their city to see them play only to not be able to watch them because of this load management happens a good bit - that type of stuff will have a cumulative effect on future fanship.

NBA is a joke now.
"Back when the league was legit!"

Adam Silver has been Joe Alleva for the NBA

This.
I’m not saying stuff to hate. I’ve stated before, this is like watching a family member head down the wrong path. I WANT to be entertained. It seems like that doesn’t happen until playoff season.
When the players give off vibes that they don’t care, that’s a MAJOR issue. Perception is reality.

that seems unlikely
Anecdotal and non-scientific, for sure
But still, it is what I see out in the world

How does that even happen?

quote:I'm not sure how impactful this really is. Do 30+ white guys really care about marketing? You either like watching the NBA or you don't. Personally, I don't like it that much. Watch maybe 5-10 games a year but I used to watch a lot more.
The game is no longer marketed to my demographic, and that’s ok.
The coverage, marketing, messaging aren't why I like it less though. I like it les because guys like SGA, Tatum, and Giannis don't interest me like Kobe, Lebron, and TMac did.

They are inflating the streaming numbers. Cable numbers are at historic lows

50% of the US.

The streamers have an incentive to juice the numbers bc if they don’t, then the rights they just bought aren’t that valuable.
Until there’s an independent ratings bureau like Nielsen to accurately gauge the numbers like they did with Cable, taking the leagues account is bogus.
The easy way to judge NBA ratings is compare its ratings to prior years while also taking into account the drop in Cable homes. NBA ratings have dropped far faster on Cable, than Cable homes being dwindled.

It's called recruiting, drafting, trading to build a dynasty type team.
Happens in sports all the time. Packers in the 60's, Steelers in the 70's, Dallas and Patriots for a couple decades, the Yankees several times in their lifetime as a team.

I used to be a huge basketball fan but rarely watch college or NBA regular season. I have watched a few of the NBA playoff games so far.
Most of my friends in Houston area are sports fans in general and used to keep up with the Rockets. I don’t think they even saw the Friday night choke against LA or were aware there was a game.
Most casual fans are steadily losing interest in the NBA if no gambling involved.

If they are cheating the viewing numbers that means they are cheating all sports viewing numbers. Thats a lot of people to hide that info without a leaker.
And advertisers get detailed data that we never see. They are who really pays the bills. If data is all rigged they would know.
