Good, it's ridiculous in an era where technology controls everything, we were using chainlinks for measures of great importance in a sport that's a multibillion dollar industry.

So we can do this, but we can't get straight-line views down sidelines at all stadiums to determine in bounds/out-of-bounds?

I’ll never understand why a permanent straight line camera is not set up on the goal line for crossing the plane touchdown reviews.

So will they have some type of chip in the ends of the ball to determine where to place it? They will still be dealing with the questionable spot from time to time.

Even if this isn't used to determine where to place the ball, at least put a chip that reads the edges of the ball to determine if it crosses the plane of the goal line.

It would be such a simple and effective fix for determining if a runner scored or not in questionable scenarios

Good. The less the idiot referees have to do with the game, the better.

Even if you put a chip in the ball, how do you know when they’re down? Have to somehow be able to match that up

Could’ve crossed the goalline/first down after already being down.

It would have to be for forward progress or something, and would be to determine if the spot by the refs is a first down. Like you’re saying, the ball could be over the line after the runner is down, so you can’t just rely on the chip.

Let’s just put sensors in their pads so we could know that as well, and then use time sync to determine where the ball is when the play is dead.

The NFL leadership has become stale and is just taking stuff from UFL now. Should have happened long ago, though.

you'd need smart yard markers to figure out where the ball should be spotted after every play... officials can give or take a foot or two and you'd never notice... or when the ball is punted out of bounds and they're running up and down the sideline... that's yardage a team might need... how's technology gonna help that?

It’s always been ridiculous to me that every down the ball is spotted by an official yards away and guesstimated by sight. Then every so often they opt to be “precise” by measuring with the chain. The whole thing is stupid

Definitely needed. Wonder if it’s somehow connected to the whistle stoppage.

Also will the sensors be in the middle of the football or the nose?

That seems like a very limited use.

My problem with a light like for the shot clock is that’s only really useful for replays. I don’t think it helps much in the heat of the moment and I don’t think we want a replay every play.

Sensors in the pad could work but how do you quickly communicate to the ref where to spot it and keep the flow of the game.

I'm interested in how calibrated the technology is. Would be fun to see a situation of the sensor insisting the chip was 1/64" across the first down marker, but visual replay is impossible to tell.
