What about the Titans in Knoxville, and the Falcons in Tuscaloosa or Athens? Makes more sense regionally.

BR traffic was an even bigger clusterfrick after Katrina than it is now because of all the NOLA people who were living in BR at the time.
People were too preoccupied repairing their homes to dedicate an entire day to watching a football game between traveling back and forth and the game itself. Especially if their jobs were back open and weekends were the only free time to get things done at their own houses.

A Cleveland/Cinci matchup in the Shoe would probably make for a good crowd. Roughly 2 hours to both cities, mixed with Columbus fans being generally split between the two fan bases already.

17 games will just frick up a perfectly set up schedule. Everyone in division plating the same division in both conferences with the 2 other games vs the other 2 finishers in standings

That's the best idea, if you have two teams in close proximity with a major university equidistant that you can hold the game at.
Steelers/Eagles at Penn State.
Browns/Bengals at OSU.
Cowboys/Texans at UT Austin.
Falcons/Panthers at Clemson or UGA.
Packers/Vikings at Camp Randall.
Jags/Bucs in The Swamp.

Maybe in Athens if they were good. Doubtful in Tuscaloosa regardless IMO
But I understood the entire point of this deal was to bring the NFL to states that don't have teams, not play in the same state just a couple hours away. Seems the goal of the NFL doing this is not just to create a gimmick playing at college stadiums but to expand their footprint to areas that don't have teams/interest, kind of like a carry-over from the London and Mexico deals. So all these ideas having Penn St host the Eagles/Steelers, Wisconsin host the Packers, etc don't really make a lot of sense in that regard

Went to Saints-Dolphins there and there were a ton of people filtering in late because they were having to get their Dome tickets exchanged for Tiger Stadium ones.
The whole dynamic there was just an abject disaster.
Most the fans were still in Katrina PTSD mode. You had Benson threatening to move to San Antonio. And the first game is fricking Nick Saban coming into Tiger Stadium. All to watch the death throes of the Haslett-Aaron Brooks pain train.
It was a perfect storm of barf.

Also, am I crazy, or did the NFL not make them install a single bar goal post for the first game? That's the only one I went to and I thought I remember them having those in place for that game, but see these Bears pics showing the LSU H-Posts in place.
