Jim Carey.
Wins the Vezina with the Capitals, and never does anything again.
Steve Mason. Wins a Calder trophy in Columbus, and has a mediocre-on-a-good-day NHL career.

I like to think Staubach got satisfaction.

What makes the flash notable? Is it that the athlete performing very well was unexpected or that the burnout/dropoff was unexpected?
The one that pops in my head is Mark "the Bird" Fidrych. Injuries derailed what looked to be a great career.

Russell White, first team All American running back out of Cal. NFL career stats: 10 carries for 50 yards.

Mark “The Bird” Fidrych was something else. Imagine your crazy uncle being an elite MLB pitcher. Watching him pitch was “Must See TV”.

Jordan Spieth probably doesn't count because he's still a decent ~30th ranked player on tour but he also came out, won rookie of the year in 2013, won the Masters and US Open in 2015 (and was runner up in the PGA). Then won the Open Championship in 2017 and hasn't won a major since.
He only has 2 wins on the PGA tour since 2017 (Won 10 times 2015-2017) so it isn't just a major drought

This is a really good one. 2nd in the Vezina, 4th in the Hart. Every player since 2005 that has won the Calder is still playing in the league, except Steve Mason. He last played in the NHL in 2017.
Columbus thought we had a hall of famer that would lead us to the promised land.
