Hey man, if you can get the calls right 100% of the time, why are you sitting here on a message board? Umps make great money.

Can you do better than 94%? Didn't think so

Punishment for what? Taking too long checking for substances? Looking creepily at Bumgarner? You can infer that the ump was instigating or trying to provoke Bumgarner, but realistically he didn't actually DO anything. And he didn't say anything.

At most he may get a private reprimand. I doubt MLB will address it publicly.

My point is that if the HP ump had reacted to madbum f-bombing him off the mound and told him to watch his mouth, etc., I suspect Madison would have blown up at him because he was wound up so tight. And if that had happened and he got ejected, he likely would have had it coming for initiating the sequence.

What happened instead is that DB took objection to Madison doing it instead, and showed his objection in the most bizarre way possible, creating an entirely different storyline.

I don’t really care what the context of the situation is. If another male is stroking/massaging my hand while staring directly into my face for that length of time, I’m going to believe that he DID something.

This isn't a serious take right?

I don’t have to infer. The ump was instigating and trying to provoke and that has no place in baseball. No one is there to watch he umpire. Don’t make yourself part of the game

I guess that we're all going to ignore that Bumgarner has always been a flaming pussy on the field.

Baseball and basketball umps/refs are such coddled power tripping pussies.

Football refs at least endure verbal abuse without the ability to throw coaches and players out the game for just words.

Rumor is that Belino will be disciplined, but MLB never discloses umpire discipline/suspensions

I do think there's this perception that the technology is there to call balls and strikes 100% accurately but that perception is not close to accurate at this time

What accuracy does it have? If its better than 94%, then its an improvement over umpires. If its rate of error is consistently the same type of error, then you can adjust to that error (and not every umpire in the league). If its a particular type of error, it can also be flagged and have an overrule option.

If we want videos of missed calls, we can dig out videos of Eric Gregg and Angel Hernandez. What is the raw accuracy number?

Where am I wrong? The umpire was performing his job. I'm not going to argue that he wasn't trying to provoke Bumgarner. I believe he was. But point to what he did that MLB will actually publicly reprimand him for.

I'm not sure it can really accurately be measured. And the fact that they measure the accuracy of current umpires on a system that is not 100% accurate can be seen as a flaw in the system as well.

Now Angel Hernandez - we can all agree he's a problem. No argument there.

But the issue for me is you still have humans making the adjustments on the system and the various factors that go into that are many and varied and not just as simple as tweaking a calibrating a still largely subjective factors.

The game wouldn't even look any different with robo ump...I assume there would be some kind of buzzer or something with a strike and the ump would relay the outcome of the pitch.

I'm for it.

If calling balls and strikes super accurately was possible, we'd already have seen it. It's not easy. The ump vs madbum was 100% wrong but bitching about a strike zone that's a ball or two off the plate is crap. I'd love to see any of you guys do better, and this is a job that just about anyone can do, so go for it. Last year's data showed that the ump was correct 94% of the time. This

Lot of downvotes but you’re right. Figuring out an umps zone and adjusting is part of the game. These dipshits won’t stop til they’ve completely ruined the sport. It’s hilarious how everyone expects officials to be perfect when players and coaches aren’t even close to it. These umps and other pro officials are so much better at their jobs than Joe Blow running to the internet to criticize them. You have people that have never stepped on a t ball field to call a game acting like they know better than someone who spent just as much or more time getting to the pro level as the players did. People that criticize sports officials nonstop are absolute retards.

Of course not, because we can't upset their fragile, delicate egos. MLB not announcing anything shows fans that they really don't care about the perception that umpires are bad right now. It also won't deter umpires from doing shite like this in the future. This is not the first time an umpire has intentionally baited a player like that.
