Joe Montana: Dan Marino was better than me, he’s the best of all-time

The title of "greatest QB" typically refers to career achievements, whereas "best QB" refers to individual talent. During his recent tour of the pint glass-shaped Guinness Storehouse with its Gravity Bar overlooking Dublin, Ireland, and exhibits tracing the history of the 264-year-old beer goliath, Montana didn't hesitate telling Men's Health his pick for the best QB of all time: Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino.
"He had a quick release. I had to step into a lot of things to get enough [force] on the ball," Montana says of Marino. "He had the perfect torque of his upper body and strength to deliver the ball quickly at a fast release with accuracy."
Marino and Montana played in an era of football when 350-pound linebackers could press their full body weight on a quarterback after tackling them and freely target their lower extremities. Now quarterbacks are the most protected they ever have been, and Montana can't help but wonder how dominant the best QB ever would be in this era.
“Put Marino into today’s game where he gets free release...and his receivers, holy cow, weren't very big," Montana proclaims. "Now these guys are 6'4," 6'5." I think [Marino] is probably one of the most unsung heroes of the game. People don't talk enough about him or realize the numbers that he put up during the times that he put them up."

yeh they didn't even have 350lb linemen back then

So that would make Joe the 2d best ever QB of Italian descent from Western Pennsylvania.

Rice was 6'2. Tons of 6'+ relievers in the 80s. Monk was 6'4. Harold Carmichael was 6'8.
All the best WRs now are 6'1-6'2. There are outliers but that's the norm..

Todays crowd doesn’t fully appreciate how great Marino was. It was mesmerizing watching him in his prime. He had a habit of patting the ball before he threw it. I remember a DB saying one time if you saw him pat the ball it was too late. His release was so fast that you couldn’t recover

Sure they did. The Fridge, Gilbert Brown, Nate Newton, Sam Adams and The Goose just to name a few.

Marino likely would have been suspended for his cocaine habit
I do think the protections Brady received helped extend his career, those QB's back in the 80's had it way tougher and watching Brady whine anyone came close to him is laughable.

I have no problem with thinking marino's the best. I hate the rings argument, but that's what keeps him down with media and fans.

Marino was a hardass too. I remember a MNF game where one of his receivers must have fricked up royally because after the play the guy was laying on the ground near the sideline and Marino bent down over him, grabbed the guy by the collar and just started yelling right in his face.

Levon Kirkland was a 300 LB ILB

I always thought it was ironic that Marino fell in the draft because of cocaine use rumors and he ends up in MIAMI!

Marino's four most prolific wide receivers, Duper, Clayton, Nat Moore and OJ McDuffie were all 5'9".

Those were defensive tackles, not LBs.

ITT folks using a typo by a writer to try and discredit what Joe Montana is saying about QB play.

That pat was mimicked so much in sand lot football

Joe was a better tackler than Marino

The stats Marino put up in 86 was truly absurd. It would be like a qb throwing for 7000 yards 70 tds in todays game
