re: Joe Montana: Dan Marino was better than me, he’s the best of all-time

I remember that hit on Brees which was a normal sack (Niners?) And he cried and got the penalty called. Jesus, these guys wouldn't have survived in the 80s. They just want to rack up yards, 7 on 7 frat league football.
This shite is overrated.
The QB's of today are not pussies, and the rules only help so much. The primary reason why teams put up much better numbers today is because of coaching. Offensive coaches have had 30-50 years to sit in meetings and think shite up since the days of Bradshaw, Montana, Marino, etc. The best college teams were running the damn wishbone in the '70s. I can remember plain as day seeing Michael Irvin in a three point stance for Miami in 1987.
Offense has come a long, long way at all levels since the days of these QB's. Take Reid and Mahomes back to 1980 with a team with some decent skill and defenses would be as wide-eyed as someone from that era looking at a smartphone.

It’s absurd the amount of great QB’s that came out of Western PA.
Montana, Marino, Namath, Kelly, Unitas, Blanda. All in the hall of fame.
And Len Dawson too.
And not one of them decided to play at Penn State.

I do think the protections Brady received helped extend his career, those QB's back in the 80's had it way tougher and watching Brady whine anyone came close to him is laughable.
Roughing the passer in Tom Brady's era (flag thrown):
Literally getting your back broken in Montana's era (no flag):

Noodle arm Joe ain’t in my top 8. The Ultimate system QB. Very limited physical skills compared to the greats.
100% agree
He owes it all to Bill Walsh and the SF GM for drafting him
Close your eyes and imagine him being drafted by the Saints in 1979, which certainly could have happened.

I’m sure Marino towered over Montana in terms of arm strength, and release time.
Heck, Notre Dame sat Montana on the bench behind Rusty Liisch.
But Montana was made for the West Coast offense. Absolute winner.

Marino likely would have been suspended for his cocaine habit
Wut?

odays crowd doesn’t fully appreciate how great Marino was. It was mesmerizing watching him in his prime. He had a habit of patting the ball before he threw it. I remember a DB saying one time if you saw him pat the ball it was too late. His release was so fast that you couldn’t recover

I worshiped Montana as a kid growing up. I got to meet him, Elway and Marino at thing in Vegas about 15 years ago. Elway was a complete dick, Joe was quiet and polite, and Marino was cool as hell. Marino signed a ball and gave it to me. Total class act when I met him.
All of them had huge hands.
All of them had huge hands.

Wrong. It's not just how absurdly QBs are coddled in today's game. There are a bunch of other things.
WRs are also overprotected. None of them have any fear going over the middle anymore. WRs in the 70s & 80s had safeties like Ronnie Lott or Kenny Easley waiting to put them on a stretcher. Now? It's a joke.
If a QB feels an iota of pressure nowadays he just chunks it out of bounds (please, one step laterally and every ref claims the QB is "outside of the tackle box"). How many sacks and hits a year did Joe and Dan take that the garbage legalized intentional ground would protect them from?
I know the modern fanboys hate to admit it, but no passing records/stats from the last 20 years really mean much. The game is so watered down from what it should be it's hard to respect any QB accomplishments from this century.

Yes, you either get fined in the NFL for putting what used to be a normal hit on a WR over the middle, or in college you're just straight thrown out of the game.
The rules put in place over the last decade favor the offense in almost every respect. It looks like a different game, even compared to 20 years ago. Again, that goes for college as well.

Elway got a coach at end of career who put together a complete team around him. Marino never had that
The year the Dolphins went to the Super Bowl with Marino, they were the #1 offense in the league with the 7th ranked defense. Some on this thread trying to rewrite history are just ridiculous.

No, I’m right.
The 2022 Chiefs would run circles around any defense of the ‘70s and ‘80s regardless of which rules you want to play. The defense wouldn’t have a frickin’ clue.
The ‘85 Bears 46 defense? Shredded athletically and schematically by a modern NFL team.

Tough to argue with this.

Joe Namath does a lot of work at my hospital and I was his therapist after knee surgery(he’s talked publicly about the procedure). Dude’s hand made mine look like a small child’s fingers were mangled too.

Are we playing by 70s and 80s rules? Because you could also argue the 2022 chiefs would be shell shocked the first time a wide receiver got their head taken off or Mahomes got slammed into the ground 2-3 seconds after the play and no flag was thrown.

Marino was my guy coming up. Problem is Shula was the coach. He sucked.
I don’t know if Dan had that killer instinct though. He had the arm. Geez could he throw that ball

I have no problem with thinking marino's the best. I hate the rings argument, but that's what keeps him down with media and fans.
That and the fact that after a seventeen year career he doesn't rank in the top 5 of any passing category. Sure the game has changed but Marino trails Philip Rivers in career yards and career TDs. You can make a credible argument for either stats or rings but you have to disregard both to crown Marino.
