That would have been in mid April...at a time A&M would have been #1 (or close to it). Hard to imagine it was "done" that early. But clearly it was done well before Monday night. The assistant coaches aren't going to make a snap decision to follow a HC without some significant pre-consideration.

Maybe others can answer. If the general timeline is correct, how long prior to Monday did the A&M admin know Texas taking their HC was a very real threat? Or was this done completely without the admin knowing it was going on?

The Trev Albert's AD hire was already odd. If his first dealing with the school is to immediately lose the HC who led them to their first NC game in a major men's sport in roughly 100 years to their most hated rival, that would be quite the intro!

Not sure about that… A&M is a real good gig as long as you win.

And even if you don't win you can still walk away with $75 million after getting fired.

Austin sucks if you're poor to middle class. If you're making 3mil/year Austin is about as good as it gets without going to Southern California.

Austin is objectively a top 3-5 city for 8 months of the year.

I mean that’s somewhat subjective given that different people prefer different settings.

Having said that, clearly this guy will be making enough to enjoy all Austin has to offer.

One interesting note is that I was told by multiple sources today that this deal -- at least at the highest level -- was done between A&M's series with Georgia and before the Regional round. It's truly a fascinating search/hire to unpack. I'll have more.

That would be a shitty move if it ends up being true. Even more so with the press conference bitchiness. I would have some doubts about having his complete focus and commitment during the college word series.

Hasn’t the transfer portal been open during this time period? I wonder if he or assistants pushed anyone away from A&M who end up at Texas.

If they really had negotiated this deal even in May at some point or early June, why did they wait so long to fire their current coach? I guess you could argue they waited until a day or 2 prior to his final game and that if Tamu loses at any other point they do it all earlier? I guess that makes sense.

it seems it wasn't much of a secret what Texas AD was going to do, A&M athletic director got caught flat foot.

quote:

“We knew three weeks ago that Texas was going to let their coach go – turmoil inside the program,” Dave Van Horn recently said.

Van Horn didn’t necessarily feel that David Pierce should be let go, but word was already out that the move was coming. Pierce spent eight seasons with the Longhorns, winning three Big 12 regular season titles and making the College World Series three times.

“If you look at the wins and losses, it’s been pretty good. Getting to Omaha, been pretty good. Just been other problems,” Van Horn said.
“I think somebody was there that wanted somebody else and there you go.”
