Insane stat - only 4 active college head coaches have won a National Championship

With Jimbo’s firing, that leaves only Saban, Smart, Swinney, and Mack Brown among the active head coaching ranks who have a National Championship ring at the FBS level.
Edit - I’m specifying FBS so the edge lords don’t “ackchully” me about guys like Craig Bohl, Chris Klieman, Lance Leipold, et al.

Regardless, out of all these teams, you’d think more coaches would be at least competitive. Most get blown out when they have the opportunity to shine on the big stage

This is like that stat about there only being two active starting quarterbacks with Super Bowls. One guy winning everything for a long time throws the whole stat out of whack.

During the game the announcers mentioned LSU and Alabama have won 9 of the last 20 NCs.
That was a bit shocking to hear.

Completely forgot Brown was at UNC again

What would be a “normal” amount? What would be a lot?
In the 2004 season there were 11 Saban, Carroll (yes there was a split in 2003), Tressell, Coker, Stoops, Bowden, Fulmer, Carr, Holtz, Paterno and Schnellenburger was at FAU. Spurrier and Erickson were in the NFL that year and would both return to college the following year but Saban and Holtz would be gone.

It's almost as if the College Football Playoff has had the opposite effect as what was intended.

It's done for Saban what the chase did for Jimmy Johnson.

There's been basically zero competitive balance in college football for nearly 15 years at this point. No sign that will change any time soon.

Or maybe the 80s thru the mid 2000s was an outlier

It started before the CFB. The first 9 years of the BCS there was a different champion every year. Tennessee, Florida St, Oklahoma, Miami, Ohio St, LSU, USC, Texas, Florida (and several of those teams, had not won in 35+ years) Since 2007 only 8 teams have won : LSU, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Florida St, Ohio St, Clemson, UGA.
Eta for clarification Clemson and UGA won their first titles since the early 80s in the playoff. Oregon, Notre Dame and TCU are the only others to play for it that have not won either a BCS or CFP

Russell Wilson
Matthew Stafford
Patrick Mahomes
And if we are going with the start of the season, Aaron Rodgers.

Saban has won 7 of those, 1 at LSU and 6 at Bama.
10 have been by Saban or a former Saban Coordinator (Smart-2 & Fisher-1) and all also coached at LSU.
13 (Saban-7, Miles-1, Orgeron-1, Brown-1, Fisher-1, Smart-2) have been won by coaches who were either the LSU head coach or had coached at LSU before winning the NC.
10 (Saban-6, Swinney-2, Smart-2) have been won by coaches who were either the Alabama head coach or had coached at Alabama before winning the NC.

It's actually extremely competitive outside of about the top 5 teams.

Crazy that Bama/LSU/Georgia/Florida account for 13 of the last 20 titles
And even crazier that Bama/LSU account for 9 of the last 20

All playoff-era titles are held by those three plus Meyer (tOSU) and O (LSU).
The last few years of the BCS were dominated by Saban and Dabo, with a few oddball winners like Gene Chizik in there.

Swinney got Clemson winning in the late stages of the BCS but no titles were won until the CFP began.

Sounds like LSU's current head coach.
