True, but it will be important to secure a top 16 seed in a 24 team playoff. Winning back to back road games in December as a 22 seed will be almost impossible.

The do or die high stakes of the pre playoff expansion regular season is what made college football special. Losing a game felt like the end of the world...now fans just shrug it off because you have 2 or 3 more to spare. Its awful

As Josh Pate so accurately points out time and time again, those "meaningful games" will only be manufactured. How many people truly think that a game between #19 Nebraska (7-3) and #24 Northwestern (6-4) in November is a preview of the CFP National Championship Game in January?

Absolutely. It destroys the weight of the real matchups between actual contenders so that you can have "pretend" meaning amongst bottom feeders.

We are completely gutting top 5 matchups of stakes so that Memphis vs UNLV matchup can see who gets the #24 seed and then swiftly eliminated 99% of the time.

Yeah, at the expense of a top 15 matchup in November that was meaningful and now is not as those two teams are going to be a lock and are thinking abut pulling starters at halftime.

Call me crazy, but I prefer that the best teams have meaningful games. Not mediocre teams who are fighting to stay ranked.

They should just have a 6 game season and a 128 team playoff. At this point, why not? If its all gonna burn might as well go all the way.

FCS has done 24 teams for a while, and there are still a lot of meaningful games. I don't see why it couldn't work in FBS? I prefer 12, or really 8 is probably better, but 24 isn't crazy but for the large amount of conference games P4 teams play because conferences are too damn big.

The average FCS conference is 9.6 teams, so call it 10. Can even make that work with a 12 team schedule. 9 conference games, 1 OOC P4 game mandatory, a rent a win, and then last game is a dealers choice if you want to risk it for an extra P4 or baby cake it for an extra win.

ETA: If you've never paid attention to FCS football, like a large majority probably haven't, I can see why the idea sounds ludicrous. SLU is usually a bubble team, and there has been a lot of meaningful games late in the season, and watching other bubble teams because the results impact playoff chances.

Chill the frick out, my point was that a 24 playoff format isn't going to devalue the current format more than having shitty teams in shitty bowls at the end of the season.

It does take some of the excitement away from regular big time matchups in college ball. The pressure to win from the fan bases will be lowered.Fans of individual teams will still love and get emotional about their teams. The thing that will happen is with 24 more fans will have something to look forward too after late November that means something. The Bowls have had no juice at all with the exception of the big 5,sugar ,orange, fiesta ,rose, peach. Now the interest will be off the charts.

when only 2 teams made the title game, if you lost once you almost surely forgeited your chance. When the playoff was 4 teams, you got 1 gimme (usually) and 2 losses pretty much meant you were done,

Now it will be expanded to be 6x as large. There WILL be teams with 4 losses that make the playoffs. If you can't see how that devalues the regular season you are either being willfully ignorant for some reason, or are a total moron. Pick one.

Some of the most memorable games and biggest upsets in recent college football history would have been completely irrelevant with a bigger playoff. Examples:

2007 USC/Stanford
2007 WVU/Pitt
Kick Six
2008 SEC Championship Game
2012 SEC Championship Game

Conversely, 2024 Michigan shocking Ohio State would have been a much bigger deal in previous eras. It was awesome when games like this meant everything. Instead, Ohio State just shrugged their shoulders and moved on to the playoffs. That's not what late season rivalries are supposed to be.

Because FBS football with NIL and FCS football are not the same.

I think the one way it could help the regular season is keeping marquee OOC matchups. Of course, the stress/importance/excitement of those OOC matchups will be much lessened, but they'll at least still happen. They were about to be a novelty in the 12-team playoff.

Overall, though, 24 sucks. I think 12 is great if they got rid of AQs and just went with top-12 at larges. You didn't need scrubs like Tulane and JMU in last year at expense of teams like Texas and Notre Dame.

The best answer is and will always be 6 teams. With 6, regular season OOC matchups still matter, but it barely devalues the regular season with the limited spots. Want in the playoff? Win your conference. If you don’t, it’s down to 2 spots for probably 4 or 5 teams.

You guys who scream the regular season will be devalued are morons. If it was so devalued why did 70,000 plus spend thousands to watch LSU-Ole Miss or Texas-Tenn. You guys say they are devalued yet the customer is telling you differently with their wallet. You say Aubun-Bama won’t mean anything yet the stadium will be packed. Next week UGA plays Bama and that guy will be SOLD OUT yet every person attending knows they will both make the playoffs.

All an expanded playoff does is create more entertainment and better football as UGA-Bama part II in January will be freaking awesome. Just like Ohio State-Texas will be freaking awesome because both teams will be bettter in December than they were in early September.

I guess it depends on what one considers meaningful. I don’t consider 8-3 K State vs 7-4 TCU battling it out to get on the right side of the bubble and lose by 30 to an actual good team to be meaningful.

Most SEC teams will play 4-6 ranked opponents during the season. With a 24 team field, you're going to have 8-4 teams contending for playoff spots after they go 1-4 against ranked opponents. Beat 3 non-conference G5 teams, beat up on your conference bottom feeders, lose to everyone with a pulse.....and you're playoff worthy?

It'll be even worse for B1G teams. Most of their teams only play 3-4 ranked opponents all season. A team like Penn State would be in line for a playoff spot with 3 or 4 losses and their best win being Minnesota. Notre Dame could get in without even having to beat a team with a winning record.

Yeah, the 18-35th ranked teams fight to get in. But now you go into rivalry week where top 10 teams that already have a playoff spot locked up are going to be tempted to rest their starters to avoid injuries before the playoffs. How does that make the regular season more interesting?

Exactly the CHAMPIONSHIP is what matters not making the dumb gay playoff.
