Last year's CFP first round games averaged 10.2 million viewers per game.

LSU vs Ole Miss and Texas vs Ohio State this season have both beaten those numbers.

And that's with multiple other college regular season games being broadcast at the same time, while the CFP games didn't have to share the spotlight with any other games on at the same time.

Agree. Everyone will bitch and moan, but will still be watching every minute of it.

I never said the regular season really mattered. Like in all sports the regular season is to make money from dumb fans while teams figure out their team and get better. A few losses is no big deal. And the vast majority of fans absolutely want an expanded playoff. I understand this particular board or conference may not, but the vast majority of fanbases want a shot which 24 then 32 will give them.

You guys can whine all you want about the old days and be upset that Bama can’t be given another title by the Oklahoma City Gazette, but them are the breaks. The future is an expanded playoff. And if you don’t like it then stop watching, but since you are here posting you obviously will watch just like you’ll watch Ohio St play Texas again and you may see UGA playing Bama twice or even 3 times over the next 3 months.

I wonder how long it will be before one of the top programs fires a coach for only making the lower seeded portion of the playoffs.

Then we really don’t disagree about what expansion does. You’re openly saying the regular season is mostly a money-making exercise, losses don’t matter much, and the real season starts in December. That is exactly what people mean when they say the regular season is being devalued.

Your argument is basically, “Yes, it’s being devalued, but I like the tradeoff because more teams get a shot.” Fine. That’s at least an honest position. But the “vast majority of fans want 24 or 32” part needs something more than you just declaring it. And “you’ll still watch” is irrelevant. People watch things they think were better before all the time.

The real disagreement is simple: you want college football to become a postseason-driven sport like the NFL. Some of us think what made college football special was that the regular season itself carried championship-level consequences.

You can prefer the new model. Just stop pretending nothing is being sacrificed to get it.

The Reddit CFB is more pro Big 10 than SEC and the majority of posters there don’t like this either

What’s fueling all this is more money not “fairness”

You’re responding to an LSU fan. Such a dumbass typing out the same paragraphs of drivel you always do and making claims without evidence

All I want is a true champion we can all accept without argument. And the playoffs are giving that to us. We haven’t had a real debate about who the champ is in a long time. Instead we argue about who should be 10, 11, and 12.

The old days of old school coaches getting Natties by threatening media outlets did not give us a true champion. It gave us a crap show. My team did it back in the 40’s and 50’s because Bobby Dodd had a lot of power and twisted the media arms no different than ND and the Bear did. Can you imagine being a newspaper editor in the south and voting for Michigan over the Bear. You’d never get access to a southern stadium again.

It was a joke and you guys worship this corruption.

An expanded playoff is played in front of us so can’t be cheated, we all watched Ole Miss beat UGA and Indiana beat Miami. I enjoy the conclusion of the season not being surrounded by argument of who is the Natty. The playoffs solved that.

And I’ve always said the regular season is nothing more than making money and getting better for the playoffs - just like every other sport. I have never been a “regular season is sacrosanct” guy like many if you. When teams like BYU and UCF went undefeated you guys gave them no credit which made your argument about the regular season hilarious. If you really believed the regular season should matter then UCF should have been given the Natty but then you want to bring in other criteria outside of wins which is comical.

There’s a lot of room between this and a 24 team playoff.

You are truly a dumbass

You’re arguing two different things now.

I don’t think anyone is saying a playoff is worse at producing an undisputed champion than polls were. Of course deciding it on the field is cleaner than having newspapers vote on it. The argument is about how big the playoff needs to be.

A 4-team playoff can produce a clear champion.
A 12-team playoff can produce a clear champion.
A 24-team playoff can produce a clear champion.
A 32-team playoff can produce a clear champion.

That doesn’t mean every expansion is automatically good for the sport.

And UCF/BYU doesn’t prove what you think it proves. Saying the regular season should matter doesn’t mean every undefeated record is identical regardless of schedule. Strength of schedule has always mattered because beating Alabama, Georgia and LSU is not the same thing as beating a weak schedule.

The question is whether going 12-0 should mean substantially more than going 9-3. You’ve already said you don’t think it should. Fine. But then this really isn’t a debate about “finding a true champion” anymore. It’s about whether college football should become a sport where the regular season is mostly seeding for a giant tournament.

That’s what you want. Some of us don’t.

I disagree. All we are doing is moving teams ranked 5-15 from playing the meaningful games to teams ranked 20-30.

Same number of meaningful games, just changing who is playing them.

How can you say that when over the past 10 years there have been multiple seasons with 3+ 8-4 teams ranked in the top 24 at the end of the season? Hell some years there are FIVE 8-4 teams ranked in the top 24.

Saying strength of schedule always mattered is rewriting history. For decades all that mattered was twisting arms of sports editors to vote for your team. The strength of schedule argument is a just a joke because it’s a manipulated stat.

Right now, Pitt and VT are playing a game where both are undefeated. This could be a 1 vs 2 game yet it’s not because of manipulation. What has UGA done more than VT or Pitt to be ranked #2 and not Pitt or VT? Are you going to tell me that Oklahoma is a legit team with that QB play?

The playoffs have shown that the strength of schedule controlled by ESPN is a joke. Otherwise, how do you explain a team that didn’t even make the weak ACC conference championship game and was a low seed ran roughshod over the SEC against teams all with “higher’ strength of schedule ratings and higher playoff seeds? It’s because it’s not real. It’s just so ESPN can pump up ranked matchups so you guys eat it up and spend money. Meanwhile, Louisville and SMU did something no one in the SEC could do and that was beat Miami.

So now strength of schedule is fake because it isn’t perfect? Come on.

Pitt being 4-0 against Bucknell, Miami (OH), Syracuse and UCF is not the same accomplishment as Georgia being 4-0 against a substantially tougher schedule. You don’t need ESPN to understand that all undefeated records aren’t equal.

And Miami winning playoff games doesn’t prove SOS is meaningless either. It proves a lower-seeded team can beat higher-seeded teams. That’s why they play the games. You keep taking “upsets happen” and turning it into “therefore everything before the playoff was fraudulent.” Those are two completely different arguments.

If Louisville and SMU beating Miami proves Miami wasn’t good, then what does Miami beating SEC teams prove? Apparently results only count when they support the point you’re making at that moment.

The regular season is how we accumulate evidence about teams. Record, opponents, road games, quality wins, bad losses, etc. None of those are perfect individually. Together they tell us considerably more than simply saying “4-0 is 4-0.” Otherwise why even play schedules?

Put 32 teams in, draw names out of a hat in December, and call it a day.

You say so far UGA has played a tougher schedule? Please tell me you are joking? I believe UGA is the best team in the country and will win the tournament but as of week 4 they have done nothing except beat a bunch of nobodies. All I want is you guys be consistent. Heck, I have a lot of UGA friends and even they laugh at the polls. At least UGA fans finally get a real game tomorrow they can enjoy.

None of this address the original point. You can think the polls are stupid, SOS is manipulated, Georgia is overrated, Pitt is underrated, whatever. The question was whether expanding the playoff makes regular-season losses less consequential.

It does.

You’ve basically admitted that already by calling September games “scrimmages” and saying a few losses are no big deal. Everything else is just changing the subject. You prefer a sport where the regular season is mostly sorting and seeding and the real championship starts in December. Fine.

Some of us prefer a sport where losing in September, October or November can actually end your shot at a national championship. That’s the disagreement.

Youre not making more meaningful games. Youre shifting which games are meaningful. LSU vs Texas or LSU vs Bama is no longer super meaningful. Instead we get a "meaningful" Iowa vs Illinois matchup. Hard pass.

The big teams will still have big games as they fight to be one of the 8 teams that gets a bye week and also to get a higher seed.

I think they should reseed after round one to reward the tops seeds in the tournament with the most favorable matchup possible.
