You keep confusing "people will still go to the games" with "the games still have the same consequences." Those are not the same thing.

Nobody has ever argued that Alabama-Auburn is suddenly going to draw 25,000 people because the playoff expanded. Of course the stadium is going to be packed. It's Alabama-Auburn. People would pack Bryant-Denny and Jordan-Hare if both teams were 5-6 and playing for absolutely nothing but bragging rights. The same goes for all of the other historic rivalries of college football.

That proves people care about college football and rivalries. It does not prove the regular season hasn't been devalued. The issue is what happens when you LOSE.

If Alabama and Georgia were to play in November and everybody already knew both teams are safely in the playoff, then the consequences of losing that game have obviously been reduced. That's not even debatable. Twenty years ago a loss in a game like that could wreck your national championship season. Now you might drop from the #3 seed to the #6 seed and get another shot at the same team six weeks later.

And then you turn around and say, "Georgia-Bama Part II in January will be freaking awesome." You're making our argument for us. If Georgia-Bama Part II is the game that really determines who advances toward the national championship, then what exactly was Georgia-Bama Part I? An appetizer? That's the entire point!

College football was unique because the regular season WAS the playoff. Every Saturday had enormous consequences because there were very few mulligans. You couldn't just shrug off a loss and say, "No big deal, we'll get them again in January." That's what made games like Alabama-Auburn, Michigan-Ohio State, Florida-Florida State, Nebraska-Oklahoma, etc. so enormous.

There was finality to them. Now we're moving toward NFL logic: Just get into the tournament. Lose a big game? Fine. Lose two? Probably still fine. Lose three? Depending on how big they eventually make this thing, maybe still fine. Then we'll settle everything in December and January anyway. And that's supposedly NOT devaluing the regular season? Come on.

And the attendance argument is especially silly. Army-Navy sells out regardless of whether either team has national championship implications. The Iron Bowl would sell out if Alabama and Auburn were both 6-5. People going to a football game tells you they want to watch the football game. It doesn't tell you anything about how costly losing that game is.

Let's take your argument to its logical conclusion. Suppose Alabama is 9-2 entering the Iron Bowl and everybody knows they're making a 16-team or 24-team playoff regardless of what happens against Auburn. Will Bryant-Denny still be packed? Absolutely. Will Alabama fans desperately want to beat Auburn? Absolutely. Will the game have the same NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP consequences as an Iron Bowl where Alabama has to win or its title hopes are over? Obviously not.

That's the distinction you keep dancing around. Nobody is saying expanded playoffs make big games boring. We're saying they make losing big games less damaging. And when losing becomes less damaging, the regular season becomes less consequential.

You can prefer that system. That's fine. If what you want is more playoff games and more rematches between big-name teams in January, just say that. But don't sit here and tell everyone the regular season hasn't been devalued because fans still showed up to watch Alabama-Auburn.

Fans would show up to watch Alabama-Auburn if the winner got a ham sandwich. That's not the point.

Show me what 8-4 team has made the playoffs. God, you're an idiot

It will very rarely happen, and will always be the 21-24 seeds when it does.

I just checked the playoff rankings from last season. Yeah you have several 9-3 teams in the rankings, but you have to go all the way down to Iowa at 23rd for an 8-4 record. Texas at 13, USC, Arizona, and Michigan at 16-18, then Houston, and GT at 20-21 with 9-3 records. Virginia also had 3 losses but they were 10-2 before losing to Duke in the ACC Championship game.

So out of the top 25, only 8 teams had 3 or more losses.

So potentially a third of the field with three or more losses? No big deal at all!

And most of those losses come from the top 12 teams by double digit points.

These teams are not competitive on the national stage. There’s routinely not even 12 teams that are competitive so there is absolutely no reason to expand the playoff. Zero.

It might decrease some interest in the first half of the season

The first half of the season was always not as interesting as the back half aside from a handful of games. Most teams schedule mid majors and FCS teams during the first few weeks

quote:

All of sudden we will have tons of meaningful games in November

The use of "all of a sudden" suggests this wasn't the case. Rivalry week was always the most important week of the season. With 12 teams then Ohio St can lose to Michigan and still go on to win the title. If that were the BCS era or even still just the 4 team playoff, then OSU is eliminated and it's a game that goes down in history. Instead it's just a footnote.

You're going to have teams going into rivalry week with spots already well locked up and may even rest players. It used to be even undefeated or 1 loss teams went into rivalry week needing to preserve their status against their rivals that would love nothing more than to play spoiler. Those big upsets won't mean anything anymor.

We're willing to throw that all away so that the meaningful games get shifted instead to some borderline top 25 teams playing for the final spots for the right to get blown out in the first round now. That's your argument.

Yeah, I was just pointing out that even at 16 teams or 24 teams it isn't going to be littered with a half dozen 8-4 teams.

I would prefer to go to 8 teams. P4 Champs, throw the G6 a bone and have the highest ranked conf champ let in, and 3 wild cards.

That would bring back relevancy to the regular season. Play to get the 1 seed and you get to face a James Madison/Tulane/etc and it is basically a tune up. Playoffs are done in 3 rounds, ends on New Year's Day.

And yet people will tune-in to watch it. That's all that matters to the advertisers and the powers that be.

The problem with that thought process is that with an expanded 24 team CFP field, now you have each of the first 2 playoff rounds with 8 games per round. Where do you fit time slots for 8 games and not either have 2+ CFP games in the same time slot competing against each other? Or having to compete against NFL games in the same time slot?

The NFL would have games on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, and Mondays in mid-December when the CFP would need to be playing the first 2 rounds.

The broadcast rights for each playoff game aren't as valuable if that game has to compete against other playoff games or NFL games in the same time slot

Unfortunately I can’t see them shrinking the playoffs barring the SEC and BIG 10 splitting off. They’re going to keep pushing it as long as possible because $$$

Those are great points, Prawn, and I tend to agree. Football is already starting to feel oversaturated, and at some point there is only so much attention people are going to give it. College ball will decline before the NFL.

My point is that I don’t think the people making these decisions are especially worried about the long term right now. They see more playoff games, more television windows, more advertising, and more revenue, so they keep expanding.

That is what bothers me about it. It feels like short term profit is driving everything, even if it eventually hurts the product itself. The whole thing stinks of greed. At some point, the old saying is going to apply: pigs get fed, hogs get slaughtered.

College football was not unique in anyway because a loss on September 4 ended your season. College football was stupid. They are finally making it a legitimate sport by having a real playoff/. You guys who believe the sport was better when 80% of teams were eliminated by September 20 can just spend your old age whining then. The rest of us are going to love watching December and January football. That a team is 9-3 instead of 11-1 or 12-0 means nothing. And this talk of lower seeded teams having no chance is just dumb. Miami was just the 11 seed and made the Natty over your juggernaut teams. So just stop. No one is buying it. The fans want playoff football when it matters. September games are fun but they are just scrimmages.

Then go watch the NFL? Thats literally what you are asking for.

So youre admitting that the regular season is pointless. Lets just expand to 64! More meaningful games and more teams have a chance right?

Please point to the masses who are wanting an expanded playoff. Ill wait.

The only thing we can hope for is that the people pushing for this CFP expansion get a reality check when they sit down for the first major negotiations with the TV networks and find out that the extra CFP games aren't going to be worth as much as the conferences and CFP committee thought.

CFP ratings have already been trending downwards. Expanding the field to 24 is only going to make that trend worse because its going to mean a lot more first and 2nd round blowouts on top of CFP games having to compete for TV ratings against other CFP or NFL games in the same time slot.

And there it is. You just conceded the entire argument. You’ve spent multiple posts saying playoff expansion doesn’t devalue the regular season, and now you’re literally saying the regular season doesn’t matter until December. That is devaluation.

You may LIKE that tradeoff. Fine. You may prefer a system where a 9-3 team gets hot in December and wins it all. Fine. But don’t pretend nothing was lost. College football used to make September and October matter because losses had enormous consequences. Your preferred system makes those losses survivable and shifts the real stakes to December and January.

That’s not “making the sport legitimate.” That’s making it more like the NFL. And when you call September games “scrimmages,” you’re making our point for us.

You’re not in the vast majority that you think you are

You ask the average CFB fan what the best years of the sport are. Very few people are going to say the 2020s. Most people will say the 90s and 00s especially years like 07. Just because you don’t fall into that category, doesn’t mean the vast majority of people are on your side

If the 24 team playoff was taking every conference winner and gave them a home game it would make the regular season really important.

But they won't do that since muh SEC/Big 10 deserve more spots b/c we have a lot more fans!!!
