re: I don’t buy the whole “24-team playoff is going to devalue the regular season” idea

I don't think it's going to be the calamity some people are making it out to be.

The benchmark has shifted from who had the best overall season, to who is playing the best at the end of the year.
We saw that when Florida State was left out after going 13-0, because they lost their QB to an injury.

So, expanding the playoffs simply opens it up to teams that struggled in the beginning, or had an injury midseason that they had to overcome.

We're not playing to win the conferences anymore, we're not playing to get to the Sugar or Rose bowl etc. That's all gone.

Yep.

Top ranked teams going to bench starters late in the season.

I like 12. I think Miami's run last year proved that a team in the 10-12 range is good enough to win it all. I could be on board with 16, first round home games. 24 is a bridge too far.

My alma mater is in the FCS, and the late season run to the playoffs keeps those games important. It's 24 teams with top 8 getting a bye.

Last year South Dakota was in that first round "play in" game as an 11 seed and had to beat a fellow Valley team at home. Then went on the road to Mercer, a top 8 seed team that had a bye, absolutely crushed them, 47-0. Eventually lost at Montana in the quarters. The seeding in the FCS is screwy, more "fair" to conferences that stink, the only teams that matter in the division are in the Valley or Big Sky.

An FBS playoff wouldn't do that, equal access. 16 is the limit IMO, but really think 12 is the sweet spot. You got to be pretty good to get in, could go on a run.

I'm also somebody who thinks Notre Dame, getting left out, would have done some real damage in that playoff. But they lost early and got left out. Paid a price for not getting it done in the regular season. 12 is the sweet spot. Regular season still matters, but anybody in that top 12 can do damage in this modern era.

So you are another person who just thinks football is great, no matter how bad the teams are, so let's just let as many in the playoffs as we can?

This is not what sports is about.

Look at pro sports.

Expanding number of post-season slots for teams has absolutely devalued the regular seasons.

Sure, it keeps fans of middling teams invested for longer because "there's still a chance" whereas before they would have packed up and waited for next season. But there is no question to quality of postseason contests suffers because weak teams are now getting in.

Not if they’ve fighting for a 1st round bye and positioning within the Top 8 seeds (especially if they re-seed after the 1st round and let the #1 seed play the lowest remaining seed).

The whole thing is now devalued. Just rip the bandaid off and create a NIL league and a actual collegiate league and be done with it.

I understand this particular board or conference may not, but the vast majority of fanbases want a shot which 24 then 32 will give them.

I don’t mind an expanded playoff, but if we are expanding the playoffs, play the games on college campuses.

There is absolutely no need to save the bowl game sites, outside of maybe a few of the big traditional ones: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Peach Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and Orange Bowl.

If expanding to 24 and having to save bowl sites (I’d prefer to have all games on campuses outside of semis and championship):

1st round (8 games) - On Campus
2nd round (8 games) - On Campus
Quarterfinals (4 games) - Bowl Sites
Semifinals (2 games) - Bowl Sites
Championship - Rotational Location at Bowl Site
