The WNBA has been a charity case for so long they run it like a club not a business. Hence why they are fumbling Caitlin Clark.
Thing is even if it remains an unprofitable failure, WNBA player salaries are so low that the magnitude of the failure just doesn't punish the NBA all that much. NBA subsidies for the entire league have historically ranged from $15-50m a year. Over 20 NBA players make $50m+ annually on their own
The NBA would rather (and have begun to) shift more of that check writing to new owners willing to waste their own money for social credit, but even if they stayed on the hook it amounts to just an annoying mandatory charity donation of ~0.3% of league revenue
But not sure they’ll need to. The last 3 franchise fees alone (a combined $750m) could fund league losses for decades

You don't think this controversy isn't good for putting fans in stands and eyeballs watching?
The league is more popular than ever because of 2 anti woke players and the publicly they're generating.
Hell,Sophie Cunningham is a modern day Joe Namath when it come to clicks and popularity.

Yeah. The people that talk about it losing money the loudest dont seem to grasp the numbers/math. They probably just heard it somewhere and repeat it ad nauseum

My girl Sophie seems to be the only voice of reason in that league.
Kind of amazing it took a straight white Aussie to do this. She’s hot too.

This is what I don’t get. Attendance and merch surely can’t make this a worthwhile venture. The TV deal brings in hordes of cash, but I have a hard time it actually generates revenue in terms of eyes on the product and tuned in to the games.
It’s like this is a stack of cards waiting to collapse. I feel like the entire league is propped up by billionaires willing to lose money so they can be socially cool and accepted in their locations.

But there won't be anything collapsing. The 3 lead investors that paid those franchise fees are Dan Gilbert (>$20b), Tom Gores (~$15b), and Josh Harris/Dave Blitzer (~$12b). The rest of their investments recoup that in no time and their teams' annual share of losses is so insignificant to their net worth that it could be covered by cash interest alone. Even if it didn't the social goodwill they get is worth it. Plus it keeps the wife happy that she gets to have a pet project as we've been seeing play out
The WNBA may never be profitable. It's also never going to be insolvent

Actually there is no evidence that the WNBA has achieved profitability yet.
The new media deals could have turned the historical yearly losses to profits but there is also the new CBA and increase in salaries and benefits that might have negated that increase. I presume we'll see a big announcement if the WNBA is actually profitable to prove how great it has become.
While some teams might have been profitable, the evidence supports the belief that the WNBA lost millions every year collectively.
As to when the WNBA dies . . . that depends on various factors. If CC steps away and ratings go down, can the media companies force a withdrawal from the tv deals, etc. It would likely need to be a confluence or sequence of events although their current controversies certainly aren't helping their perception and shorten the leash if something negative happens.

I don't watch the WNBA, but if you think it should shut down because it's not "profitable", you should probably want every college sport that's not football or basketball to be shut down as well.

There was a WNBA game on in the restaurant at lunch today and the coach of one of the teams had a “Trans Kids Belong” shirt on. There’s part of the problem with this league.
