G6 Conference Realignment by Buckeye Backer
I think the SBC has an opportunity to expand and make their conference a top tier G5. CUSA is on life support and schools are actively trying to get out of the conference. The SBC is a conference that is starting to up its profile. If the SBC added a few top schools from CUSA, it could be a nice conference.

SBC East:

APP St
Coastal Carolina
Georgia Southern
Georgia St
Liberty*
Marshall*
FAU*
UAB*

SBC West:

Louisiana
Louisiana Monroe
Arkansas St
Texas St
South Alabama
Troy
Southern Miss*
Lousiana Tech*

The main problem with this scenario is I don’t think any SBC presidents will vote yes for FAU who was a former member and bolted for CUSA. Also as long as ULM is still kicking in FBS LaTech won’t get the votes.

I’ll say it again, the following would make for a lot of fun in football and baseball:

Louisiana
LA Tech
Tulane
Southern Miss
Arkansas State
App State
Coastal
Liberty

Give me every bit of that.

Here's my personal ideal conference. Not even based on any metrics, just who I'd like to see together based on who should still be around in the remnants of the G5.

East:
App State
Coastal Carolina
UAB/USA
WKU
Troy/MTSU

West:
LaTech
Rice
Louisiana
Tulsa/SMU
Tulane

That West division would fill the stands in every sport IMO, at least for us.

AAC schools officially leave today

Sun Belt announces it's intention to add two schools

Mountain West is exploring expansion (Which would certainly make things messy)

Conference USA's leadership locked themselves out of the office on accident and will put out a statement once they remember the door code.

I read that they also intend to jettison the two non-football schools. The Southland should make an effort to grab Arkansas-Little Rock and maybe even Texas-Arlington.

It makes sense for us to be in the same conference.

Lol…you can move LaTech right outta that West division for sure! That’s pretty much where Tech was in the old WAC. Don’t want any part of that & travel expenses wouldn’t make any sense.

The AAC needs to go after FAU, Rice, UAB, and CSU. Instant upgrade for academics and locations.

Is West Florida jumping to D1? IIRC they're a young football program but have become relevant quickly. Baseball is pretty good as well.

both schools would be good pick ups. both are solid athletic programs across the board.

UL and LA Tech have to be in the same conference this go around. No more dodging each other.

Great conference geographically. The kind of rivals the 1980's Southland Conference had can be developed. Fans would care about something besides trying to move up to a better conference.

If the G5's stop getting big money games from the P5's, they'll need to go to smaller, more regional conferences to build rivalry games that fans will want to see. That way they'll at least be getting more money from ticket sales. As they are now, CUSA and the Sun Belt are too spread out, and there are too few real rivals. This is more of the same.

One (and maybe a half) isn't like the other. Unreal how bad of a situation this is.

This is why I think for anyone below P5, football only conferences make a lot more sense. It doesn't matter how far flung a conference is if you only have to fly to 4 or 5 destinations on a charter flight.

Make the other sports conferences align geographically and you cut costs in the areas you need to while maximizing value in the areas you need to.
