After losing John Metchie in the SEC championship win over Georgia, Alabama's other 1,000-yard wide receiver, Jameson Williams, went down in the first half of Monday night's national championship loss to the Bulldogs. The injury, which Nick Saban speculated was a torn ACL after the game, took away Bryce Young's top weapon, which proved to be massive as the defensive slugfest turned into a bit of a shootout in the fourth quarter.

Williams began his college career at Ohio State, the alma mater of former NFL standout Santonio Holmes. After the injury, Holmes took to Twitter to blame the playing surface at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Holmes believes artificial turf played a role in the end of his career in 2014, at just 30 years old.

“I ended my career playing on that bulls---. Turf is a trash, worst thing to ever happen to football,” he said.

Holmes went on to clarify that he wasn't talking about Lucas Oil Stadium specifically, but all artificial turf fields. According to the Colts website, at least 23 of the 32 NFL stadiums use the same turf as their stadium.

Holmes suffered a Lisfranc injury in 2012 at Metlife Stadium against the 49ers, which cost him all but four games that season. He went on to play just 18 more games over the next two seasons, finishing his career in 2014.

I did notice a lot of players slipping last night. I dont know how players at this level can have on the wrong spikes for a surface.

Because they do not listen to the Equipment guys and think they know better.

There has to be a relatively easy way to examine data on this and compare injury rates on modern turf v. grass.

I do think all football should be played on real grass though.

It seemed that there was more paint on the field at places as well. I get covering some logos, but it just seemed odd.

The turf at Indy should have been played on enough to where it is starting to fill out and the tire should settle deep. But it was paint or the tires seemed to be up higher.

He's not wrong. That crap should be outlawed. Football should be played on grass.

the amount of turf we force kids to play on is a crime against humanity

I believe a bunch of guys wore Vapor Pro's last night. Problem with that is they are blades. If it was me I would make everyone go into Savages. Only time I would want my team to wear Vapor Pro is in late part of season after the fields have been chewed up.

google search says turf has 28% more lower body injuries than grass

The NFLPA has been lobbying the owners to find a solution avoiding play on the current turf

Maybe. We KNEW the differences between astroturf and natural grass. This "new" field turf was supposed to be better than both grass and the old astroturf.

Are those full cleats like guys would wear on grass? I figured teams wear something a little shorter on artificial turf now, maybe not quite an indoor soccer shoe, but something that doesn't dig in as much as you need on grass.

I thought the technology of these new artificial turf fields was such that it's safer than grass, but I am growing skeptical of that.

Yes, it started with the old Astroturf. Now everyone has gone to the rubber pellet variety, and the complaints remain. There is no safe surface for freakish athletes who play at that speed and immediate change of direction to play on. The human body isn’t built for it.

I thought roughly half of NFL stadiums had real grass.

Wendell Davis calls him a pussy for complaining about the Lucas Oil surface.

Santonio never played at the Vet in Philly.
