There are other factors in my opinion in addition to the turf. I'm not saying this was true for Williams.

1. Bad training methods leading to destabilization of the joint structure.
2. Lack of an aggressive mobility program and proper warm up cool down.
3. PEDs "Anabolic steroid use paralleled with exercise may lead to dysplasia of collagen fibrils, which can decrease the tensile strength of tendon. Changes in tendon's crimp morphology have been shown to occur, as well, which may alter the rupturing strain of tendon and the normal biomechanics of the extremities."

Grass can be grown outdoors and brought in ala Arizona.
Ask all of the players who played on the grass (namely Wes Welker and Clowney) in NRG that was brought in each game. The tray system was brought out after games to the parking lot to grow and then brought back in for games. The problem was that some were soft and some of them were firm, and they had to spend a lot of time on getting the seams to be perfect that when they weren't, injuries occurred. That's why they changed it out in the middle of the season back in 2015.

They had so much paint on that field I what amazing. My daughter was like they just left the colts logo on there and covered it up
The Colts midfield logo is inlaid turf, not paint. So they had to green out that square in the middle to try and make it disappear. But painting over white turf and getting it to stick is hard as hell.

Maybe. We KNEW the differences between astroturf and natural grass. This "new" field turf was supposed to be better than both grass and the old astroturf.

The newer field turf was definitely an upgrade over astroturf but I don’t recall anyone ever saying that it was better than grass.

Put grass in the Superdome and see how long that lasts.

They tested a patchwork grass field a long time ago for a preseason Saints game, 1999 I think. Spoiler alert, didn't last.
