There are a miniscule amount of great coaches in college and the portal has made it even worse because you can't develop guys for 4-5 yrs in a program anymore. Coaches can't kick the dumbass out of most players anymorr because they will fear they will transfer out in a whim, so you get undisciplined bone-headed stupidity from almost every team. Colleges are coaching like HS from a complexity level and the NFL only has what college gives them. It's all borderline unwatchable.

This. Hell, Brady even talked about it with Stephen A not that long ago that touched on this very thing. Players just aren’t getting “developed” hardly anymore. You have exceptions. But because guys aren’t sticking around 3-4 years in one system, there’s a trickle down effect from OL play to QB play. Offenses have been simplified because of the influx of transfers to every single college program and NFL coaches are having to simplify their offenses to compensate or risk wasting their top 5 draft pick on a QB that can’t play his first two years because the offense is too complicated

Defenses have adjusted to the offenses of the past 4-5 years and now you’re going to see a period where defenses and running the ball is going to win the majority of games. But I do think there will be transfer rules implemented in college and I think you’ll see an uptick in quality again. Gonna be a rough 4-5 years to get to that point, though

This is a big one too. Older players that have retired have talked about how this is killing the game. They used to be able to practice way more. And I think that mindset filters over into the preseason so teams aren’t getting the reps in.

Every facet of the game is watered down and the players don't seem as fundamentally good as they once were.

The QBs especially. This year is the worst crop of Quarterback play I can remember ever seeing in my 35+ years of fandom.

They can't beat a cover 2 (Tampa 2, whatever you want to call it) because they can't read the defenses.

Flags are ruining the experience of watching, but I'm starting to think it's not the refs fault but the players for not being disciplined and working on sound fundamentals.

Football is not much fun to watch these days. How do they fix it?

I've been saying this for the past couple of years. Teams have placed TOO muich emphasis on "measureables" instead of guys who are just good football players and the game is suffering for it. Some of what you are seeing IS the defenses adjusting, more cover 2, but the passing decline is real. WR's are drafted/signed based mostly on their 40 times. Many are NOT good route runners, have poor hands/ball skills, and if the ball is not coming to them they don't play with full effort running decoy routes, run blocking, etc.

I think we're at a time where defenses have officially caught up. The elite quarterbacks still exist. But those are and few between. Gone are the days where mediocre quarterbacks can still go out there and casually throw for 300 yards 3 touchdowns.

I think a lot of teams would be wise to go back to being power running teams primarily.

The NFL has recorded its highest television ratings in nine years, averaging 18.6 million viewers across its first three weeks of the 2024 season. This number is a significant rise compared to the previous season’s average of 17.9 million, which was itself the highest since 2015.

It gets really bad after 8 outside of Montana (but Neil Lomax can take his place)

Steve DeBerg and Wade Wilson would slice up 2024 NFL defenses like a couple of hibachi chefs. DeBerg wanted to win more than just about anyone left in the NFL, and Wilson was just flat-out talented. Not even fair comparing guys like that to Russell Wilson or Marcus Mariotta in my opinion.

Everything is in decline.. sports, life, etc.

Just like when you were kids and you invent some game in the backyard. In the beginning there are very few rules and it's just fun. Then you start adding rules, changes, etc to make it "better", until eventually it becomes a chore just to keep up with all the nuances of what was once a very simple game.

This year is really bad. The numbers are the worst they’ve been since early 2000s. Even the supposed goat has been mediocre.
10 QBs with over a 100 passer rating…

QBs are still elite and going great, but with the way defenses are playing efficiency is what is needed from the QB spot

banning tackling on defense

somebody was bitching about PI needing to stop being a spot penalty and become a 15 yard first down like college.

i'm seeing defenses ease up on what would otherwise be clean tackles/coverage because refs do everything possible to protect the offense now.

The proliferation of the spread offense was the beginning of football’s long decline.

The best teams in college football don't rely on the portal and use average programs as landfills.

For example Alabama has 13 portal players on the depth chart. Mississippi State has 46.

Tickets to every Chiefs Game are premium prices. Nobody can knock them off. They are the Hunted yet injuries seem to have no effect. Players keep answering the call to find a way to win.

They couldn't slice up inferior defenses in the 80s, but whatever.

Mahomes
Allen
Lamar
Burrow
Stroud
Stafford
Herbert
Purdy

is roughly the to 8 right now

So you're looking more at Hurts, Dak, Kyler, Cousins, Baker, etc., not Russ/Mariota. That's not even considering old Rodgers, Daniels, Goff, etc.

If you compare the 2, there is a lot more depth of good/solid QBs in today's game.

How do they fix it?

-Need to bring back the 5 yard contact rule for defenses.

-start calling holding again

-start calling illegal motion again

-start calling offensive PI again (pick plays especially)

-move the kickoff back

-move extra point back to where it was

-get rid of pussy kickoff rules

The PI call in the last two minutes decided at least two games NFL games I watched. Sometype of innovation is required here so its not a spot of foul penalty. Shouldnt be able to get 30+ yard penalty at end of games. The calls were legit but the punishment of the penalty does not fit the crime. PIs deciding game outcomes is not good.

Maybe that's where we disagree. I don't see where defenses from the era of DeBerg and Wade Wilson were inferior to those of today. Where are the Reggie Whites or Lawrence Taylors? I guess you had that Suh guy a few years ago, but the way he was portrayed by the "sports media" ( ) compared to LT kind of tells you everything you need to know about the game today.

I simply do not think any level of success by an offensive player in 2024 equates to anything at all in 1990. Go back and watch the games.
