Quinn Ewers is about to get millions of dollars without playing a single snap.

Ewers is the guy who will single-handedly make these huge NIL deals into cautionary tales and re-adjust the market entirely

if you were a billionaire and you favorite hobby was LSU sports....what is the big deal about paying a kid to go play for your favorite school?

most of these deals are not from companies expecting a ROI...its simply buying players

If you have the level of fandom to pay a player that kind of money, you are going to want some form of ROI. At the bare minimum you would want that kid playing, but more importantly you want to see wins on the field. Imagine the guy(s) who pays Ewers, and he either 1) gets beat out like Rattler or 2) sucks and doesn't win games.

Funny to imagine these college kids living in plush, nice houses off campus while their teammates and fellow 'students' live in run down dorms and apartments.

It's obvious he played the system.

state of Texas wouldn't allow him NIL money at the time so he commits to OSU takes the money and transfers back to texas where he wanted to be all along.

He played the system.

He's not a quitter he's working the system.

Meh. He opted out of his senior year. Quit on his team mates, school, and community.

It would be interesting to see how the players in college that opt out perform in contract years vs non contract years.
Yes, I know this guy did it in high school, but the point remains.

Blame is on the NCAA. They reaped the monetary benefit off of athletes for years while holding a hammer over their head relative to “amateur” status. They could have mitigated this before a court filing came out by pooling money and distributing it to athletes. They chose litigation instead and are now reaping what they sowed. Can’t put the milk back into the jar now. I don’t see how they can legally regulate it at this point.

Lol at all the people on here that thought this was just a nice way to give kids extra spending money. Programs are throwing 95 million at Mel Tucker and you think they’ll skimp on a blue chip qb?

I have to think giving huge sums of money to teenagers to play a game more often than not will have an adverse impact on the player’s performance.

I hope so bad this kid ends up being a shitty QB. That'll stop some of this stuff in the future if they give a kid whose never played a snap millions of dollars and he ends up shitting the bed.

Isn't it more likely that the same money was previously being given to the Cam Newton and Reggie Bush guys under the table? I think we're just seeing it more out in the open now

The total market will be minimum 4x within 3 years. Ewers' performance means nothing in the grand scheme.

I understood some of the naive opinions on NIL months ago, but no excuse now. The total money pool will continue to expand at an accelerated rate, performance/roi means nothing

most of these won't last long if they can't get a return on them.

Exactly what returns should they expect???

The unclear variable is how many random billionaires are actually interested in buying players for their schools. Hundred dollar handshakes have nothing on some of the money that truly wealthy people can afford to waste

But do enough people like Knight, Bezos, Musk, Gates, Koch, or Bloomberg really want to put up millions of their own money (with no financial return) to bring in the best possible recruiting classes?

I dunno. But if a few are interested they could transform a Rutgers or North Carolina or Stanford type school into elite programs

I can’t wait for everyone to watch him play and realize that he’s just okay. Saw him plenty in HS, and there were better QBs in the Dallas area alone. Then he couldn’t get close to the #1 spot in Columbus.

They weren't getting First Round type money under the table. They were probably getting some pretty good stacks of bills into the 100s of thousands, but First Round money if "Life Changing" money. Those guys weren't getting that under the table without everyone noticing.

Which has been how Texas schools have done things since at least the 70s.

Ask Eric Dickerson about the car he got as a recruit. IIRC, it was from A&M then he went to SMU instead.

Eventually these NIL deals will be in writing and state you get the money if you finish your career at said school and if you transfer you owe the money back.

watch.

Kid is living the life. Coasting high school hype to millions of dollars from desperate boosters. Texas isn’t even in the SEC yet and I already hate those pricks.
