I mean Kalen DeBoer made the playoff, got drilled by Indiana 38-3 in the quarterfinals, and got a contract extension
Making the playoff is what defines success in this sport for head coaches
Back when the playoff started, it began devaluing NY6 bowls since only 4 teams got in, many a coach were fired or retired under that new landscape, most notably Les Miles - LSU was making bowl games and churning out NFL draft picks but they fired him because the litmus test of success as a big-time college head coach had changed
The point is the coaches want this for necessity when it comes to their job security

They have just about killed everything that has made the sport great

This is awesome. This will keep 30-34 fanbases interested well in to November and includes more teams than ever in the process of crowning a national champion. Sorry it’s no longer a 4 team sport by mid November for those who will stop watching.
And on campus playoff games will be huge. All if you whining will be tailgating at round 1 if your team makes it.

I’m great with the elimination of conf championship games. They’ve essentially always been meaningless for the most part.

more coaches making the playoffs = more job security

Coaches think making the playoffs will mean job security but I can guarantee you, you squeak into the playoffs at the bottom three or so years in a row and get blasted out without winning a game and the fans will still want you gone.

Home Playoff games first two rounds please.
Only go to Neutral site bowl game for the 4 teams in

So with a 24 team playoff, a team like LSU would need to get to about 8 wins, with the 2 rent a wins they will only need to win 6 real games.

Not always. SEC Championship used to be a big deal pre playoff era

Fans will always want the coach gone when their expectations aren’t meant. For some teams that’s making the Final Four (Bama/UGA/Ohio St). For others it’s winning a playoff game (Michigan, LSU, Miami). For others it’s making the playoffs (Penn St, Florida, Clemson, etc). For some it’s finishing in the top half of conference (Mich St, Ole Miss, Auburn, GT, FSU types). For others it’s simply being .500.
The expanded playoffs will not give coaches any more job security than in the past. Penn State just fired a guy who won 11 games a lot.
How many seasons will Auburn and Florida give their new guys if they don’t win meaningful games?

a playoff with the max participants (likely 24)
So inviting everyone, every given year, in the history of CFB that has a chance of winning it all down to the last 1% chance...Well, I guess you could invite the entire Top 25 (Army and North Texas want their shot too).

Depends on who you are

I don’t want 24 teams but if we must then I’m willing to compromise for the other things to happen

It won't be that simple with the number of automatic buy-ins they will give out.

Can’t wait for the ESPN morning shows debating teams #25 and #26 being unfairly left out of the playoffs. Will be riveting TV I’m sure

That is not true at all. We knocked Tennessee out of the national title game by upsetting them in the 2001 SECCG (and they haven’t fully recovered lol). Likewise, we don’t win it all in 2007 if we had lost to Tennessee in the SECCG.

Give me the disappointed big conference team... they will have a lot of talent, and time to figure things out over the course of the season.

quote:Les Miles didn’t get fired for not making a 4 team playoff. Miles got fired because he refused to adapt his offense to the modern changes that were taking place at the time and his final 4 full seasons were 3, 3, 4, and 5 losses. The program was trending backwards at the same time Saban created a dynasty at Bama and had beaten LSU 5 games in a row. Miles would have still gotten fired even under the BCS system based on results and program trajectory over his last few seasons at LSU
