I went to the preseason game at old Veteran Stadium in Philadelphia in the game that got cancelled because of the shitty Vet Stadium turf for those who remember preseason football games from 2001

Maybe the most forgotten defense in the modern era. A better defense than the Ravens and maybe even better than the 85 Bears.

It was also impossible to score in the 70s.
Using a baseball term, historians call it the Dead Ball Era in the NFL, while Brady, Brees and Rodgers played in tbe Sosa/McGwire era.
This was all before the Mel Blount rule...where muggings of receivers was legal, cheating was encouraged (linebackers and DBs would wear fake casts on their arms to clothesline and behead receivers.
Of the Top 10 statistical most dominant defenses of all-time, 7 of them played in the 70s.
'75 Rams
'76 Steelers
'71 Vikings
'72 Dolphins
'77 Falcons
'78 Cowboys
'77 Broncos
It wasn't the defenses per se, just how the game was officiated. Raiders bump and run, DBs would tackle receivers before they got 5 yards off the LOS. You had to be an extremely gifted route runner to even get into your pattern.

Skins beat that Ravens team and proceeded to go 8-8. Classic choke job after being a preseason SB favorite with all the big signings and riding off the promise of the 99 season.

Nice. That defense was the best I ever saw.
Disclaimer before I get 500 downvotes : I was too young to remember the 1985 Bears defense.

QB's were scared to death of the 85 Bears defense. They knocked starting QB's out of a lot of games. What they did to Dallas in Texas Stadium was almost criminal.

ESPN already getting a boner from this website. Can you imagine what they are getting from the rest of the country?

Surprisingly, this team still holds the record for fewest points per game allowed in a season since the merger.
2000 Ravens are the best defense I ever saw. In their four playoff games, their defense gave up 16 points. I don't count the NYG Super Bowl kickoff return as points against their defense. A running play against that team was just a wasted snap.

I enjoyed the ESPN documentary on that team. Then the McCaskey's wouldn't pay up to keep some of the better players. And Ryan left for the Eagles.

The “Ray Lewis killed a guy” bit is one of the more widespread reimaginings of recent history by the masses that I can recall.
His friends most likely killed the men in question and he helped cover it up. This is what the evidence suggested, what the state’s initial accusations state, what Lewis’ testimony states (that his friends committed the crime I mean), and what the families of the victims believed. He could not have been present at the fight that killed the men. He was originally charged with murder along with the other two men because that’s what Georgia law allows for, and the prosecution leveraged it to get his testimony against the other two. Ultimately they weren’t convicted (nobody was) due to insufficient evidence even with Lewis’s testimony.
Perhaps an insignificant difference to some, but the fact is nobody involved in the case ever actually believed Lewis stabbed the men who died.

What sticks out to me about that team was the AFC Championship Game when Gannon carved everyone else up. But Siragoosa landed on top of him, and knocked him out. And Siragoosa had to be close to 400 then. Ravens only scored one TD. And still won.

In 1973, teams averaged just 140.9 passing yards per game, the lowest since World War Two. The Dead Ball Era continued until 1977, when rushing again outpaced passing by two yards per game.
In 1977 – the last year of the so-called "Dead Ball Era" – teams scored an average of 17.2 points per game, the lowest total since 1942.
Then, in 1978, the NFL adopted a series of rule changes to open up the passing game:
1) The Mel Bount Rule, which we know as the Illegal Contact foul, prohibited defenders from touching receivers beyond five yards from the line of scrimmage before the ball was thrown. Previously, contact was allowed anywhere on the field. As we know, the rule change of 1978 has allowed receivers to run free wherever they want...with no fear.
2) Pass blockers were allowed to extend their arms and open up their hands to block, impeding rushers.
3) The Side Judge came into being, providing an extra set of eyes on downfield shenanigans.
That year, the Steelers defeated the Cowboys 35-31 in the highest-scoring Super Bowl to date, foreshadowing things to come.
