Jeff Fisher was the coach. That explains the 8-8 record.

In all seriousness, there was some squandered talent there between the choke jobs against Buffalo and KC with a nearly broken Joe Montana.

So the Houston team could never take back the Oilers moniker, history, etc. like the revived Browns did? That sucks

Even though Buffalo is the one everyone remembers, this is the one that really did them in. They were so damn good that year. 11 straight wins after the Babygate deal. Just wasn’t their day against KC, a team they beat 30-0 in the regular season.

Adams stupidly broke up the team, replacing Moon with Cody Carlson and the team had a disastrous following year. Wasn’t long after, Bud started with his stadium crap again. He had already alienated fans with threatening to move to Jacksonville years before unless he got renovations to the Dome. That and as Owl said, hatred between Adams and Bob Lanier pretty much sealed their fate. Drayton McLane was no help either. The Dome was well and good he said...until the Oilers moved. Then all of a sudden, it was a dump and he threatened to move.

Still irks me to this day because the Oilers were a lot better franchise than the shitshow currently on Kirby Dr.

It’s a crime that we don’t get to see those unis on the field.

It would be like if the Saints left New Orleans and we got a new team, wearing this.

Yep. The county still owed something like $50 million on the bond for the last Astrodome renovations that Bud Adams had demanded by threatening to move, and there he was demanding a completely new stadium just a couple years later. The Astrodome renovations were not popular w/ fans, and Bud was increasingly unpopular.

Plus, he was trying to move from a county property to a city property, so he expanded the number of politicians he needed help from, and they all thought he was an a-hole.

Plus plus, there were already some competing local investors eyeing a new franchise if he did move the team.

It was just a whirlwind of bad timing given the history of the team, the local economy at the time, and political relationships.

There's a good episode of A Football Life about the hell of the 93 Oilers. Buddy Ryan hated Kevin Gilbride, wouldn't shut up about it and wound up taking a cheap shot at him on the sidelines late in the season. They had a backup lineman commit suicide that year too.

My junior high team had copies of the Oilers uniforms. I wore #84, the same as Billy “White Shoes” Johnson.

And that nasty Buddy Ryan 46 blitzing defense nearly finished breaking Montana for good. They beat the crap out of him that first half.

Then Montana did Montana things, obviously with help of a dominant pass rush by KC as well. For always being labeled as a finesse QB with a scrawny build and dinged up a good bit of the time, Montana was pretty damn tough considering.

People thought his career might be over in '86.

Adams was just going to use Nashville to bargain with Lanier. When he got to Nashville, Bredesen dropped so much guaranteed money on him, that he took it.

Yeah, thats right. I believe some cities are making laws that state if you accept public money to build a stadium the team name and history belongs to the city.

Houston should have act like they hated the name "Oilers" it's almost like Adams is keeping it to give a big frick you to the city.

Things worked out nicely for the Cleveland Browns and the Charlotte Hornets

My 1st football game that I had as a kid was the year after the Saints went 1-15 in the 80s. You basically just picked a play on offense/defense and then would find out what happened. Running play - Sweep Right.....Gain 3 yards.

It was impossible to keep any game close against the higher rated teams so I always played the Oilers. There were a couple of times that I took the lead late in the 4th quarter against the Oilers, only for Billy White Shoes Johnson to return the kickoff for a TD and dash my young dreams. I never did win a game when playing as the Saints.

In the late 80s or early 90s, I played fantasy football with my friends and 'created' the league. I remember Ernest Givens carrying me to a championship in the inaugural season.

Bud Adams wanted to play Vince Young because they kept losing. Finally the coach put him in, and they won a game, hence the bird flipping. I thought that moment was hilarious more than anything.

If someone else buys the team down the line (fingers crossed) they could buy the rights from the Titans I would think and rebrand the Texans. They would make so much money off of it if it happened. The McNairs never wanted to do this and Adams probably wouldn’t have at the time anyways. Idiotic decision, the Oilers logo/unis are awesome and you still see people here wearing it

Everything about the Texans branding is bland as hell which is on point for the franchise and ownership, and I’m a Texans fan
