Crane is acting like a poor and won't sign anybody.
—-Crane’s history of contracts do not bear this out. Brought in JV twice, re-signed Yordon, experimented and lost on several duds, re-resigned Altuve.
These comments about Crane not paying anyone are way off. He just refuses to hand out those 5-6+ year deals for crazy amounts of money, and honestly, I agree.
Ever since the Carlos Lee deal, I’ve felt the same way. Most of those long contracts don’t work out toward the end, and you’re stuck paying a guy who isn’t producing anymore. Abreu is just the latest example of that.
Soto’s contract is absurd.
Same with Trout.

Owners giving out these ridiculously long deals are asking for trouble. You get 2-3 good years, then spend 7-8 years regretting it because you can’t afford to sign anyone else. The Dodgers are deferring a lot of their money now, but eventually, it’s going to catch up to them, and they won’t have the flexibility to pay their future stars.
I know this might not be popular, but there’s no way I’m giving Bregman what he’s asking for. A .260 hitter with 25 HR and 90 RBI isn’t worth 6-7 years at $250M. He might play well for the first three years, but by years 4, 5, and 6, when he’s 33-35, he’ll be a role player making $30M. It’s just not worth it.
No thanks.

Weird, I thought the list of teams he’d accept a trade to leaked and Houston wasn’t on it.
Would have to hope the Cardinals would help a little with the salary and if the Astros are taking on a majority of the money the prospect return would be small.
Doesn’t really make sense with the glaring need now being a corner outfielder who ideally swings from the left side

Cardinals eating some money is the only way this makes a little bit of sense. For what you have to pay him the next 3 years you could get one of the available FA. Maybe these deals for Walker, Hernandez, etc. are going to be bigger than we think.

It's easy to choose the bad ones but we've seen several work out as well.
Harper, Machado are the latest whoever worked, you have Kershaw, Verlander, Max, CC, first Miggy deal, Alex Rodriguez his Texas and first Yankees deal was fine, etc. I'd say the majority look bad at the end because the player is now 35+ with a declining skill set but you should be able maximize the 4-6 years before the decline becomes significant.

Right now, we simply have to find another third baseman. Do what you have to to get Arenado.

Tell me how Harper and Machado worked out?
In my eyes, winning the WS is the only outcome that really matters

This feels like a leverage play at Bregman as well

You have to think Cards are wanting Framber and Cam Smith in return. We could counter with Pressly instead
We have good young pitching and just like Tucker, we won’t pay Framber Fried-like money
I could see it happening if they eat the right amount

There isn’t a snowballs chance in hell 2024 Nolan Arenado is returning Framber
The Cards have been pretty vocal about wanting to get younger. I could see Smith I guess, but it would take eating some money.

I hope ur right, but it would be a Framber rental, and if they say ate Pressly’s salary along with some absurd amount of Arenado’s contract with that much control, we could sign a pricey OF
Just spitballing. Trying to figure out how they could make it make sense

This deal really only makes sense for either side if the Astros eat all the salary to limit the prospect return, IMO. Cards are trying to dump money, I’m not sure why they would agree to take on some of his salary if that’s their goal, but maybe to them every little bit helps if they have a cheap guy they want to start getting some big league run at third.

A 34 year old coming off the worst season of his career who's still owed 3/73? Sign me up.

I think the only plus to Arenado is he seems like a hard arse who wants to win, which I think this clubhouse has been missing. Not super enthused about the way he’s been trending though at all. I’d much rather just bring back Bregman at 7 years 185 mil or whatever

I’m not necessarily opposed to Arenado if STL eats a lot of the money but wtf are we going to do about the OF? It’s legitimately the worst in the MLB if you consider Yordan a full time DH

Ps I hate this thread being stickied at the bottom

Flip Paredes and Pressly for Arenado with both teams taking on full salary of each player they’re getting. That might work. Maybe have STL throw in a low-level high-ceiling prospect.

You’re also handcuffing yourself in the future. You want to win a World Series, but don’t you want to set yourself up for future success as well?
While you’re paying $35M on a used commodity that’s worth $2M, where could have that money you’re wasting gone to?
Clearly there’s two side to this. I loved the way Luhnow built this organization for over a decade and they were able to get away with it because Crane isn’t paying guys for 8-10 years.

To add, and I’ll die on this hill….
2 World Series…it’s hard to win just one.
7 straight ALCS’. Without these gigantic contracts that are not a guarantee of winning anything.
How many Championships has Machado won?
