Idk what the number is, but it needs to enough where we still can afford to sign another bat for LF. That’s how it’ll make sense.
If player X plus Arenado is > Bregman, then fine.
If they’re only getting one more bat it’s gotta be better than Arenado.

And that’s what I’m getting at I guess
If you consider that we can’t lockdown Framber long term, why not entertain the thought of him being a piece that allows you to go out and sign a deal that gets you Santander or Teoscar
If this team has a strength, it is young arms that you still have in your control. If that one year of Framber gets you Arenado for 3 and one of those OF bats for 5, with all monies being equal, it might make dollars and sense
But I was so wrong on Abreu it made me wonder when was the last time I was that wrong. When the Red Sox were willing to send Sale for Bregs, I think I would have done it. Then Bregs owns Sale in the playoffs and Game 5 in ‘17.
Well, now we come full circle. Bregs is unsignable as a .260 25 HR 90 RBI guy, and Sale is the reigning CYA winner
Does anybody ever really know??? LOL

I think if they can pay it down where the Astros only owe 50 over 3 that makes some sense.
I don’t think Press waives his no trade to go to a non contender, I don’t think the Cards would want Framber unless they could flip him and that frankly doesn’t make sense for either party. You probably don’t risk giving up Matthews, Melton, or Smith for Arenado so I really don’t see the fit here. Does Wesneski make Spaghetti expendable and they could send him to Cards for the Cards to pick up some salary? I’d certainly hope not bc I like Spencer. Maybe you give up some lower level guys you like and Montero and do a shitty unwanted salary swap? Probably doesn’t work.
Hasn’t been linked to anything at all, but what would you guys think about Spaghetti and Smith headlining a deal for Luis Robert?

Nah, it’s still Dream. Houston’s first two pro titles. Three NBA Finals appearances. Three Final Fours.

Harper, Machado are the latest whoever worked
Those deals look good now. But at some point, they’re going to be an albatross as these players age. Bryce Harper still has 8 years left on his deal. Probably not as productive 4-5 years from now as he has been, and then the Phillies are left with 3-4 years of an underperforming contract. The Astros don’t want to get stuck with a lot of dead years on a contract. Have no problem with that because we’ve seen what happens when you miss on a player’s contract. We’re paying Jose Abreu not to be in the organization and we paid Montero to pitch in the minors at one point.
Crane is not cheap but he runs it as a business. He puts money into the product up to and sometimes over the limit set by MLB. Have no problem with that. But when you operate that way, your farm system has to keep pumping out players to sustain excellence, and that’s hard to do.
My issue with Crane has been the overreaction away from analytics because 3 or 4 meatheads who played 20-50 years ago don’t like the way the game is played today and think the back of a baseball card is the way totally to judge a player.

Meh. I’m biased but I’d hope we wouldn’t get rid of Spaghetti and Smith for an inconsistent CF. Robert has had two above average seasons out of 5. Were injuries mostly to blame for this fall off last year or did he just slump?

Mix of both I think. He had some bad lowlights of just mailing it in, but can’t really blame him for being on the worst team of all time.

These comments about Crane not paying anyone are way off. He just refuses to hand out those 5-6+ year deals for crazy amounts of money, and honestly, I agree
Well thats the market for those guys. So if you want to keep top end players, that's what it cost. Otherwise you sign guys like Jose Abreu, Josh Hader, Rafael Montero etc. on more palatable short term deals
You listed deals that didn't work out but I doubt teams that handed out big deals for Gerrit Cole, Francisco Lindor, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Bryce Harper, Corey Seagar have buyers remorse

Most of those long contracts don’t work out toward the end, and you’re stuck paying a guy who isn’t producing anymore
I don't think anyone expects them to work out near the end of the deal. The years are just extended to lower the yearly tax number.

Just ran across this on Twitter
Of the 30, there's probably what...12 that didn't work out in some form or another. Either just being bad contracts or unloaded by the team that signed them. Others are still too recent to make a judgment
Benintendi
Springer
Davis
Franco
Bryant
Heyward
Greinke
Canon
Strasburg
Cabrera
Stanton
Trout

I think there does exist a number that makes sense, esp if they would be interested in Pressly
I notice Astros fans seem desperate to try to include Pressly on any deal. Make me wonder what the return would be or if another team would want to take on that salary even if it was just a salary dump for one year?

I think as the bigger names start coming off the board someone will pivot to Pressly. Plenty of teams could use him. We probably get a lottery ticket in exchange for the salary dump.

It's as much not having him risking any leads as it is salary
He's been so reliable for so long that I hate to see the decline
He could get to some new scenery and do well

For as exciting as last week was, sure is quiet this week across the league with lots of good players still unsigned

Bregs and Burnes seem to be holding up the show.

I know a few people in the front office for the Astros and they said Bregman was given a number and that he was ok with their offer. They think he just wants to squeeze a little more out if possible. Will give the Astros option to match
I bet he stays right where he is

Astros offer is a fair one
I think most Astros fans would be happy to see him accept it
But I don’t see why you hire Boras and spend your contract year refusing to hit to all fields lowering your walk rate to a career low going for the fences if you’re not taking the highest bid
