Every college HC wins because of the talent they bring and/or the assistants they hire. No HC makes tackles or scores touchdowns - and few do anything more than offer occasional input into playcalling on Saturday.

I was just an average high school football coach. Nick Saban is 1,000 times the coach I was. However, if I had Kiffin as my OC, Brent Venables as my DC, and Ohio State’s roster against prime Nick Saban with whatever staff and players are at Arkansas right now, I would beat the shite out of him. I would have enough sense to stay out of the way and let the talent and assistants win.

Recruiting great players and hiring great coaches is 90% of being a successful head coach in college ball. Beyond that, you just need to be a good enough leader to keep the Ferrari on the road - and that has little to do with X’s and O’s.

Need more info.

3 days to get ready at Buffalo was never going to be easy. It’ll be interesting to see how Detroit does next 3 weeks.

Home - Jets
At - Panthers
At - Cardinals

How would you do when those assistants got poached away to be someone else's HC after a year?

Part of what made Saban great was his ability to consistently identify elite OCs when the ones he had kept getting hired away. He didn't have to worry about DCs as much because he was a defensive guru himself, which brings me to another point.

Great HCs need to be elite on at least one side of the ball themselves in order to sustain success. Dan Quinn is a great example to use here, IMO. Quinn was the Seahawks DC before he became the Falcons HC. Quinn won a lot of games early in his tenure with the Falcons, but his defenses largely sucked. This was a pretty good tell to me that his success was going to be entirely dependent on his OC hires. Once Shanahan left, it fell apart quickly, and it was predictable.

What is Dan Campbell's calling card? What are the Lions going to be consistently good at because Campbell is there?

Lack of starter talent on that D.

Both starting safeties were put on IR before the season started. It's Aidan Hutchinson all by himself out there.

Thats not fair. Maybe Dan carried his coordinators. You are only as good as those you surround your self with. It works both ways.

Calm down.

It has only been 2 weeks,

The defensive backfield is their biggest issue.

Truth is, the rest of the division has improved and caught up to them while their defense has slipped.

Ben Johnson is excellent, but their offense is still humming at a clip good enough to win the division. Bears looked great for 1 week, but I am not ready to crown them, just yet because they also have a suspect defense.

Just keep St. Brown racking up those fantasy points, and I'll be good.

Can I throw the same salaries at their replacements as Saban could at Bama? Because that would help.

1. He won four national titles with Jim McElwain, Doug Nussmeier, and Brian Daboll. I’m not saying they were bad coaches, but I wouldn’t call them offensive savants either.

2. The one thing all of Saban’s assistants had in common is this: they all had great talent to work with. Defensive staff too.

I would take Thompson High School’s staff with Alabama’s players over Alabama’s staff with an average college team any day of the week.

the team hasn't been the same since losing Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn

Are you the kind of guy who gets mad at his coach b/c the 2nd and 3rd stringers have been forced to play and says something like "DOESN'T MATTER, NEXT MAN UP" as if that will magically change the fact that the best players are still hurt?

I don't think a DC alive could've gotten stops with the defensive personnel Detroit put out there last night.

people who pick former LSU players or coaches (Aranda) as a guy they want as a coordinator or head coach completely expose themselves on not knowing shite about coaching prospects.

It would have taken some serious balls to fire Campbell and hire Ben Johnson, but it could have vaulted them over the hump in Detroit.

In the nfl, you either take advantage of your sb window or you have a generational qb talent where the window technically never ends. The lions do not have a generational qb and missed their window. Johnson could be their HC, nothing would be different. They don’t have the talent

The blame falls more on Brad Holmes. He chooses to build thru the draft. His last few drafts have been underwhelming, giving up picks for players that haven't made an impact. Refuses to make big moves to take advantage of the window they have. He knew Kirby & Branch were going miss several games, but yet trots out practice squad players.
