He admits he would have been a distraction if he was kept as the backup. He’s probably right. Either way, Rickey Henderson endorses the quote.

I mean--he's right. As weird and annoying as he seems to the general public (me included), the guy's teammates and people within organizations seem to love him and are drawn to him. He's magnetic. Having him around as the backup QB when you are starting a rookie 1st round pick is setting your rookie up for failure. Even if he doesn't outwardly do anything, teammates will implicitly follow him.

They released him because athletes who repeatedly refer to themselves in the third person aren't a good fit in most team sports.

He's not entirely wrong. He gets way too much publicity for a guy who didnt get signed until the 11th hour last season and hasnt garnered any interest since getting cut.
