Yes they play overseas. Remember when Britney Griner was arrested in Russia? That’s why she (he) was there

So you hate the UFL too, right? Since it's being propped up by the Rock despite losing a shite ton of money.

How many people are saying the UFL matters or the players should get paid more? Now ask those questions for the WNBA.

As Bill Burr famously stated, women don’t even support the WNBA. If they did advertisers would follow and money would flow. Maybe they need some Chippendale cheerleaders

The NBA should just fund a reality TV show with Caitlin Clark. They would probably make a bunch of money.

This, the WNBA still exists because the NBA subsidizes it and strong arms advertisers to make them advertise there. It would have died a quick death years ago were that not the case.

But I agree, the NBA can do what they want with their money. I can honestly tell you I've only seen a few minutes of WNBA action ever and that was because a game may have been on in the background at a bar where I was at the time.

Hell I won't even watch if LSU gals are playing - I just have zero interest.

Why are the ancillary football leagues that pop up every few years allowed to fail?

because none of them partnered up with the NFL.
and in fact several of them outright claimed to be attempting to compete with the NFL.

Yep. Why would a red blooded non homo American boy take inspiration from a woman college basketball player?

I seriously have no idea.

you don't have to be a homo to have watched her play and get interested in the sport.

The nba feels like by engaging women viewers that they can develop a league separately AND enhance its own viewership.

Yeah. It's a long term vision to grow the game among women and hope it pays off in increased viewers/merch/ticket sales

Incels.

I've never watched a wnba game and I probably never will even if they have 20 caitlyn Clarks. I just think it's funny they are trying to tell the NBA how to run their business when the nba keeps bringing in more and more money every year. If they can grow the wnba brand that grows the nba brand

Apple invested $10 billion into making an Apple car over a number of years then scrapped the entire thing. Part of running a business is investing in something in the chance it pays off in the future.

And I think that the mere phenomenon of Caitlin clark is proof that it’s working.

Listen. I get that the college game and WNBA aren’t the same thing. But they are keeping girls involved in the sport far longer than 30 years ago. Thus better competition. Thus a legitimate star. The girl can shoot.

Then comes the next layer of the pyramid-look at the arenas for games Caitlyn played.

Filled to the brim with young girls.

It’s a logarithmic expansion of the sport. Kind of like tiger did for golf or what MJ did for the NBA.

They have to capitalize on it for sure but this is why they did it.

All those wnba fans will also be nba fans or at least not try to change the channel when their husband is watching the nba

The WNBA is free to pay their players comparable amounts to their NBA counterparts. If they honestly believe the economics of the league support it, have at it.

And when the league folds in less than a season, I’m sure it will be the man’s fault too.

Another, pathetic thing, was in a recent interview wherein Caitlin said she hoped her playing would inspire boys and girls. I looked at my 11 yr old son and asked “you feeling inspired to become a female basketball player after seeing that?”

Did your son look at you like you were an idiot for thinking that Clark wants to inspire boys to become women basketball players?

Nothing wrong with being inspired by someone who took what many people (you obviously included) consider to be a worthless endeavor and turning it into becoming a millionaire in your early 20s. Perhaps there is angle you take there to have a pretty good conversation with your son.

Or you could teach him to be a dismissive smart arse. World needs more of those for sure.

Because if the WNBA had a semblance of a following it would be reflected in its revenues and thus its player salaries.

I don't disagree with this, but at the same time the way the women's cap works is way different than all of the other leagues. I imagine it is this way because is still heavily subsidized by the NBA and the WNBA players have no true leverage.

The cap for the NBA is based off of 50% of league revenues. The WNBA cap is around 10% of revenues. In order to increase from that percentage, they need to have their total revenues increased over the internally set benchmarks. No information on who sets the benchmarks or how they are determined each year.

Regardless, if they went to a 50% of total revenues like the NBA; you could see the teams' caps jump from $1.4M to $8.5M. Still nowhere near the men's salaries or salaries from other sports; but still a lot better than what they're seeing now.
