Showing virtual fans is so dumb, and I do not understand every sport’s fascination with it.

-5 leader in the clubhouse...certainly not out of the realm of possibilities.

Yes it is.

The winner will be closer to over par than -16.

Setup is fine tee to green imo but the pins were too easy for a day with no wind and softer than expected greens.

This ain’t your daddy’s US open. The top guys now are mostly wusses. JT, Bryson, Rory, etc.

They’ll bitch and moan if it’s too hard.

That has little to do with the fact that there is zero chance the winner finishes 16 under

The lowest 4 round score at a US Open at Winged Foot has been -4 in 1984, which is also the only time the winner at Winged Foot has finished under par. The course will assuredly become more and more difficult as the tournament progresses. The winds are supposed to be steady at 12-15 MPH all day tomorrow. Saturday, the winds will continue to be 12-15 MPH until the middle of the afternoon, when they'll go down to about 10 MPH and will continue that way through the rest of the weekend. There is a 0% chance of rain through the weekend there as well with sunshine all day, so those greens will start to get baked and the course will become much, much more difficult, especially with more difficult pin locations than today. If the forecast holds, I don't foresee players being able to attack these greens. They'll be a lot of safe shots and playing for par. And we've already seen how much of a penalty that rough is with how deep and thick it is.

The USGA gave them some pretty easy pin placements today. You won't see that the rest of the week. They won't cut the rough and they might narrow the fairways. I think the winning score will be over par.

Deja vu all over again.

The good news is Phil broke 80. The bad news is he only beat one amateur and an unknown pro.

There are rumors in the twitterverse the head of grounds at Winged Foot went off in the afternoon meeting over setup with the USGA.

Not sure a superintendent has much influence over how the USGA/PGA/etc decides to set up a course. They pretty much just tell him what to do.
