The study, which is being presented Friday at the American Heart Association's virtual Scientific Sessions, pulled data from 311,065 death certificates for Black and white people in the United States who died from cardiac arrest from 1999-2018.
Researchers found deaths from cardiac arrest, when the heart suddenly stops beating, initially dropped by nearly half. The rate fell from 80.1 deaths per million people in 1999 to 44.3 per million people in 2012.
But then it reversed course, climbing 8.8% overall from 2012 to 2018. The increase was significantly higher – 10.9% – for Black adults compared to 6.9% for white adults. When it came to people under the age of 35, deaths from cardiac arrest among Black people jumped by 35%. But they fell for white people by 11%. Among those 65 and older, deaths increased twice as much for Black adults – 8% compared to 4% for their white peers.

So I treated Marine recruits for 8 years. Sometimes kids have underlying cardiac conditions (such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or anomalous coronary artery) that go undetected until they engage in extremely strenuous activities (such as the fitness tests). These conditions throw their hearts into life-threatening arrhythmias.
We've had a couple of kids that literally dropped dead and there was no way to know it beforehand unless they somehow received an echocardiogram beforehand. So it definitely happens and is nothing new.
Like everything else, you hear about it more now. Before social media you would only hear about it if it was someone famous or local

Someone explain to me how a teenager in peak athletic form gets cardiac arrest? Peds?
could be enlarged heart, could be other things. These things have happened for years.
* even before covid (for some out there).
I hope the kid recovers. I am not a fan of his dads, but he is still a human.

Not a fan of LeBron but I wouldn't wish this on anyone. Losing a child or even the possibility of losing your child is the most terrifying thing that can happen to a parent. Hopefully it turns out to be okay

The fact it happened somewhere with trained medical staff was an absolute blessing. That’s the only reason he is alive
The only other way you survive these things is to be lucky enough to have a preventative ECHO done. Which 99.9% of the population isn’t going to have an ECHO done for no reason. (Some colleges are starting to do it for every athlete though)

My middle brother's best friend dropped dead their senior year of high school from a heart attached and then a year or two later, he had another good friend drop dead playing intramural basketball at Georgia Tech from the same thing.

If this is due to a pre-existing heart condition, he will probably never play basketball again. Agree he's lucky to be alive.

This is the second time in the last year that the USC medical staff has responded to a men’s basketball player suffering cardiac arrest during practice. Center Vince Iwuchukwu collapsed at a practice last summer and was revived by USC athletic trainers. He made a full recovery and returned to the basketball court six months later.

We will see. This is actually the second time in the last year USC has had an incident like this and the previous player was able to rejoin
But does seem unlikely

Happens all the time. Usually an enlarged heart related issue.
My cousin passed away at 14 from a similar thing.
He was playing basketball, got light headed while walking off that court, collapsed and passed away.
It was a heart condition (can't remember exactly which one). It happened 10 or 11 years ago now.

He can rejoin depending on the condition. I have a friend who almost dropped dead because of an undiagnosed heart condition years ago. He still runs 10Ks

Shaqs son had a right anomalous artery. It kills 60% of people before they reach the age of 20……
Was able to correct it and continue with his career. I think now, as long as you don’t die, they can correct most issues(not all, but most) and live a normal life without restrictions

quote:I understand it’s rare, but it’s kinda crazy an ECHO isn’t part of routine health screenings at the age of 15 or so. It would take this rare occurrence, and basically make it obsolete completely.

Someone like as self absorbed as Lebron doesn’t go from being adamantly against the vaccine to getting his opinion swayed by “research”.
Maybe not, but he has also proven to be very hypocritical and willing to go along with the whoever signs his checks

Have T-D's leading medical experts weighed in on this yet?

Anyone else think it's weird for posters to preface comments about the kid with not being a fan of his dad?
Posted on 7/25/23 at 10:29 am to Bonkers119
This can not be a good sign for his future in BB.

Very weird and very odd.
