The bizarre incident went down Tuesday night in Ohio during a clash between New Philadelphia and Steubenville ... when a player received a red card for appearing to mouth off to one of the refs.

Moments later, one of his teammates sprinted full speed into the referee, laying him out, sending him crashing to the ground.
We're told the official was taken to the hospital and is now being treated for broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

What on Earth could be running through that kids head to do that?

Back to “Did this stuff happen before and we just didn’t see it without social media?” I think not.

The coach needs to be looked into. There are at least TWO players on that team with discipline issues. One got the red card reportedly for mouthing off to the ref and the other thinks it's ok to assault the ref. That may well indicate an issue with how that team is coached.

Would likely be felonious assault. 2-8 years in prison if tried as an adult

Reminds me of that Texas high school punk who assaulted the ref

The clip cuts off but where is the coaching staff rushing onto the field to physically remove the player. The school should come out and cut the kid from the team. Don’t even wait for the state to jump in.

Juveniles have no legal standing, usually.

OHSAA seeks ‘significant’ punishment for hit on soccer official

STEUBENVILLE – A video circulating online from last night’s New Philadelphia-Steubenville boys soccer game appears to show a Steubenville player tackling an official.
In the video, it appears the official is running down the field to give a different player a yellow card. The other player sprints toward the official from about 12 yards away and puts his shoulder into the official’s midsection, knocking him to the turf. The official appears to be in pain.
OHSAA Director of Communications Tim Stried says the OHSAA is waiting for the school’s response to determine any additional penalties.
“The OHSAA is aware of the incident and has been in communication with the school. The OHSAA is waiting for a response from the school as to the discipline that the school will take against the student-athlete, which will determine if the OHSAA will issue additional penalties. The school has indicated that punishment will be significant, which the OHSAA agrees with. Physical violence against an official is among the most serious offenses that a coach, player or fan can commit and the OHSAA will pursue this to the fullest extent.”
New Philadelphia won the game 2-1.

A lot of really awful shite has happened within Steubenville athletics in general over the last 15-20 years. A few football players got arrested for raping a girl who was passed out and uploading videos of it to Instagram, and then several school admins got arrested for obstruction because they tried to cover it up.
