It means he can't breathe on his own. They have him on oxygen.

This take is so stupid, and I hate the front office of the NFL

this isn’t some backyard pee wee game. There is a whole lot of shite that goes into canceling or postponing a game especially this late in the season (with all due respect to Mr. Hamlin)

It's incredibly stupid that they don't have contingency plans and were not prepared to act more quickly. Your username seems appropriate.

What are the odds this is temporary? Is a vent always a sign it’s over or is it just a bad sign that can be overcome?

I’m a former paramedic but he would have been intubated in the ambulance. If commotio cordis likely he was shockable. Critical doesn’t mean much right now after a cardiac arrest, gonna be critical this soon after, obviously, even if he survives and walks out tomorrow

Game officially suspended. No word on what the plans are for resuming the game at a later date.

Prayers out for Damar Hamlin and his family.

He has a tube down his throat connected to a ventilator because he wasn't able to breathe on his own.

Something similar has happened once in the 100 year history of the league. 50 years ago.

Curious as to what happened, the video replay doesn't seem like it was a bad tackle so what could have caused him to collapse like that?

Suzy is a sports reporter. Not saying that pejoratively, but she is not a journalist in the same vein as an alphabet channel anchor or a news network anchor. And even those folks have a hard time filling space with sudden and unexpected changes in programming. Just go back and watch the coverage of 9/11 to see the best in the business at a loss for words. Suzy was prepared to introduce stats and hand off lines to analysts, and she ended up having to narrate quite possibly the worst live on air event in nfl history. Go easy on her.

..and this isn't done gently. It can be shocking to see this if you've never seen it before.
