With Mississippi State, it was a convergence of bad things. Lost leadership guys like Mangum 2 years ago, then alphas like Tanner Allen last year, and culminating in the loss of Landon Sims and closer Stone Simmons in consecutive days. Sims, an alpha, struck out 10 of the 11 he faced in the game he was injured. Very difficult year for a proud program.

USM went 11-2 in 2011. They followed that up with 0-12 in 2012 and 1-11 in 2013.

LSU had a retard head coach who basically stopped caring about coaching after finally winning something for once. A crash was to be expected

Mississippi State just sucks but baseball is way more unpredictable

No reason a college football champion should drop off that fast

LSU because they are still not getting any respect and are not ranked as of right now Kelly as the new HC and LSU fans saying he is much better than Orgeron. If that is true, then why aren't they ranked in the top 25? LSU talents are still top 20. If Kelly is that good, they should be ranked right now and have top 20 talents on the team to compete. Is it because Kelly isn't as good as LSU fans say? Even Notre Dame with a much unexperienced HC has the team ranked in the top 20!
Do not forget many LSU fans were saying Notre Dame roster isn't as good as LSU roster. Then again why isn't LSU not ranked in the top 25? Also, LSU said if Orgeron can win a championship then Kelly should do it within 3years!
this might be the dumbest thing I have ever seen posted here. Yes lets blame Brian Kelly for not being ranked when he's yet to coach a game

Michigan State went to the playoff in 2015 and went 3-9 in 2016. That program fell off a cliff quickly.

Very good example. They've had some decent teams here and there but no where near the consistency of the mid Dantonio era teams

LSU lost 25 key players, a dozen key coaches and had Covid to deal with. I don’t think their “collapse” was to be taken too seriously tbh.

This.

Oregon State is a great response.

From pre-season #1 to 5-6...that is a shocking decline (especially with their returning talent).

1998: 12-0 Tulane Football
1999: 3-8 Tulane Football

This happened with 8 out of 11 Starters on Offense Returning. The difference was Tommy Bowden vs Chris Scelfo.

I never understood why LSU was the only team that had to deal with Covid.
Seems fundamentally unfair, singling out just one team like that.

You are putting entirely too much thought into preseason rankings, especially for a team that plays in the SEC

How do you lose a dozen key coaches when you can only have ten?

I'm a bigger fan of Auburn's 2010-2012 drop.

2010 14-0
2011 8-5
2012 3-9

I listed it as a reason, not the reason. I mean, JaMarr Chase literally opted out due to Covid.

No other team in the nation had a guy the level of Ja’Marr opt out.

Point is, Covid resulted in some goofy shite happening. So it’s hard to say a team “collapsed” from 19 to 20, when the entire world went stupid.

lol

covid may have been the flimsy excuse but let's call a spade a spade. It was a free pass to save his body for a year and not have to compete so he could just coast til draft time.

so why didn't many more teams in CFB see their win totals drop in half from one year to the next? Bama and UGA didn't seem to be too affected by it.
