What they really need to do is add about 5 more regular season games. I think that would make the football really good then.
Only if these are international games. We need more international games to grow the sport. The travel won't affect quality of play at all.

The worst part of this is, it came from the Saints special teams coach. The very same Saints that used a surprise onside kick to help win their only Super Bowl.
Dude should be banned from the Superdome.

Yeah but he had nothing to do with that play

What an idiotic decision by the NFL.
That statement can be made about most of their decisions lately

Not sure how the people in this thread think someone could have a surprise onside kick with the new rules where the kicking team can't move (from standing on the 40 yard line) until the ball hits a player or lands in the landing zone (20 yard line to goal line)

Pretty comical…only the kicker and the returner can move…kicker needs to get to the other 40. Be kicker carnage.

The NFL has been watering down their product for years. Owners don’t care and as long as the cap keeps rising, the players won’t either
And yet the sport continues to grow. Amazing what gambling will do.

Huh?

First off...Not an NFL fan anymore either. I quit following hardcore back around 2006.
As for the small market thing, I used to agree but KC was flyover country nobody cared about except the locals and they have managed to build out to the elite levels. yes they and maybe GB are the exceptions that prove the rule but I never thought I'd see what KC has become and I am no fan of the chiefs.

Tampa Bay won the superbowl not too long ago.

The two smallest market teams in the NFL won a playoff game last year. Maybe one day saints fans will finally get over the "NFL hates us" shtick

It’s a tv show, it’s not NFL football the way fans think it is.

I doubt any of the players GAF…guaranteed there’s a line to be a part of it.

Talking about the fans and the game itself. Who wouldn’t be in line to make that kind of money?

Is there any data that shows players are injured more frequently on on-sides kicks? If not, what is the justification for this stupidity.

What's next....the QB can't run so you can't sack or tackle

The onside kick piece and the overall kickoff piece isn’t really related to injuries. The data mostly pointed to kickoffs being mostly unused at this point because of the other rule changes that were made to encourage less kicks and safer returns (no wedges, the touchback going to the 30 etc)
They are trying out the new XFL style kickoff that got good reviews the last few seasons over there and has a higher rate of returns and scores compared to the current rules
Part of those rules include to return team being much further off the kickoff marker, and unable to block I believe until the return has started, so naturally there’s not really a way to “surprise” a team with an onside kick anyway, other wise you’d put a team in an impossible position to defend the normal kickoff
So it’s not like the league went “let’s outlaw surprise kicks”, it’s just a effect of bigger changes to the play overall
In the XFL they also have the component where onside kicks are replaced by 4th and 20 I believe, so you get 1 play to get a first to keep possession, which the NFL has experimented with already and will likely be in place sooner rather than later. The NFL owners declined making this rule change for 2024, likely wants to see this overall kickoff change happen successfully before going that far
