What a qualifying, looks like it could be a very interesting year. I really hope there is at least a 3-way fight for both championships

Will Merc go back to sidepods or is their struggle directly related to their power unit?
I'm sure we will see a different power unit in the second half of the season regardless

Speaking of Guenther, I had never heard of him until he became principal of Haas, and I only just looked him up to check his background, and boy there are a couple of surprises there.
Professionally, he managed some rally teams then got hired by Jaguar F1 then let go, then when Red Bull acquired Jaguar they hired him back, then when Red Bull hired Adrian Newey they let Guenther go and asked him to start the Red Bull NASCAR team. So Guenther moved to North Carolina and started up the Red Bull NASCAR team, then left after three years to start up a company that designs and manufactures composite parts for racing. Having been in NASCAR and in North Carolina is how he made Gene Haas’s acquaintance and apparently convinced Haas that creating an F1 team was feasible. So Guenther was the driving force that made it happen.
Now his personal background… I had no idea that Guenther was born and raised in Italy! He grew up in a mostly German speaking area near Austria, so German is probably his first language. Also, he still lives in North Carolina with his wife and daughter, and became an American citizen (he has dual Italian and US citizenship).
Who knew that Guenther is an Italian-American who lives in North Carolina?!

As of March 1st, the engines are frozen until 2026 outside of changes for reliability. The MGU-K, CS and CE and be upgraded once by each team until Sept 1 and then the whole package is frozen until 2026.
The March 1 freeze included the ICE, turbo, MGU-H, exhaust, oil, and fuel.
Updates for reliability and safety will be given more scrutiny than they did in the past. The manufacturer has to apply for the change then the technical application is decimated to all the teams for comment.
There are some very small changes allowed to the turbo and wastegate positioning with less scrutiny and they can change oil or fuel suppliers but it must be commercial not a technical rationale.

I imagine everyone at Haas must be excited to have replaced Mazepin with Magnussen.
I'm sure they were looking for a reason to jettison him and the invasion gave them all the excuse they needed. Massive upgrade.

I actually did know that but not much else about him so thanks for the short bio.

Chatted with Guenther in the Austin airport after COTA last year. Extremely nice guy. He was on the phone with someone at one point talking about another team and it felt like I was behind the scenes in Drive to Survive with what he was talking about
Asked him which race is his favorite and he said Australia. :csb:

I don't think power is the Merc issue.
One thing to consider is most of the power unit customer teams use the trans as well which sets the rear suspension points. If Merc was off on that all the others are as well.
Speaking of power, the RB's were the fastest through the speed trap apparently. 5-6km faster than the Ferraris iirc so their speed isn't because they have more horsepower than anyone.
Unless they have a lot more allowing them to run more wing angle and I don't think it's that.

Does Putin get a Christmas card from Gene Haas this year, or will that be frowned upon?
Also, looking at the final times, holy crap Ferrari and RBR are head and shoulders above the rest of the pack.

Interested to see who Ferrari pushes as the number 1 for their team. I assume it will be Charles

While the shakeup in qualy was refreshing, I'm very excited to see how these bad boys race tomorrow!

You know Merc/Ham dominance broke F1 when people are excited Ferrari is back at the top.

That red car is fast as hell. It took Max giving everything he has to barely split them.
The front 3 will be great to watch tomorrow. The run down to turn one will give Max the window. The front 3 might slip away and 4/5/6 could have their own little fight.
After that who knows. Alonso sitting there waiting to pounce looks fun.

I don't want them to dominate like Merc has the past 8 years but they're an iconic F1 team that shouldn't be fighting for best of the rest.

I would like to see F1 be more competitive like motogp. You honestly have no idea who will win each race. It could realistically be one of about 10-12 riders any time out

Bottas right behind Lewis in an Alfa
Also looking like the Haas gamble paid off. Gonna be a fun season.
