In 1990 I bought a 1980 Datsun with 90k miles on it for $1100.
$1100 always stuck with me as meaningful money, no matter how much I had.
To say, have found my “appreciation decay”’ of new vehicles to be low as result.
Meaning I tend to really appreciate owning a new vehicle and continue to appreciate it longer.
That old Datsun still showing up.

I bought a single cab short bed 1997 dodge dakota with a 318 in it. Pretty sure is was around 18k or so in 1999. Flipped it driving offshore and bought a new 2021 dodge ram sport off road package with an 360 and 410 gears for around 24k or so in 2021.
My true first was a 81 Chevy square body that my uncle gave me and my dad and I worked on it to restore it then traded it for an 85 square body project truck.

About $42K in 2017. Bought my next one 8 years later (Feb '25) for $60K
$18K additional for same type of truck. Different makes but similar model of each.
Per ChatGPT:

Per ChatGPT:
quote:
If the 2025 truck was truly the equivalent trim level, engine, and capability as the 2017 truck:
Inflation-adjusted fair value: ~$56k–57k
Actual purchase price: $60k
Premium over inflation: ~$3k–4k
That's close enough that I'd classify it as "within normal market pricing", not overpaying.
The surprising takeaway is that a jump from $42k to $60k sounds huge (43%), but over eight years it works out to only 4.6% annually, which is not far from what inflation and the truck market actually delivered during that period.

4k, I paid 2500 and my parents gave me the rest it was a 1993 Neon Sport that I had to keep two gallon jugs of water in because it would overheat if I drove for longer than 30 minutes. It had well over 150k miles on it and it last me two years before I wrecked it.

My Dad bought it, a 79 Ford Courier with about 30k on it. Bought in 1985 and I think he paid 800 dollars.
Ran like a top, no AC, AM radio only, vinyl seat and floor. In about 1989 my mom found a 83 Nissan with AC and without asking him we bought the new one...(i paid 100 a month for it), and we sold the Ford for like 1000. It was one of the few times in my life my Dad was mad at my Mom. Just beside himself.
Of course the Nissan AC quit working in about a month and the clutch went out in the first year. If I could find that Ford Courier I would buy it today. You could roll the passenger window down from the drivers seat without reaching too far., and the heat straight off the manifold would melt a rubber boot...not hyperbole, it did.

Purchase year 1998
87 Toyota truck 4x4 - didn’t have a model name back then. But was very similar to the truck Marty Mcfly in Back to the future drove.
Purchase price i wanna say $5k - Toyota trucks just hold their value like no other

In 1978 my dad bought a 1970 Cutlass Supreme with long hood scoops and a spoiler for about $200 if I remember correctly. We had to tow the car as it wasn't running when he bought it. It needed a good bit of work including engine work, a paint job and interior work. We rebuilt the engine and suspension, replaced different parts of the car mostly from junkyard parts, put on new tires, had a little bit of body work done and sanded and painted the car and had the bumpers rechromed, and the stereo replaced. I think we probably had about $1500 in total costs for the car. It's ridiculous how inexpensive cars and parts were back then and we did part of the work ourselves. The car was canary yellow when he bought it. I had the yellow bumpers chromed and painted the car candy apple red. It was a total badass hot rod after we finished it. I even drove it on the Talladega Speedway in 1984 after Dale Earnhardt won the race. I had lost my keys in the infield and had to come back the next day with a couple of friends to pick it up. The guy at the gate told me to not drive my car on the racetrack, and that gave me the idea with my friend's input to absolutely drive it around the racetrack.
