In 1988 my dad bought me a 1987 Toyota pickup with a 4 speed manual transmission and no a/c. I drove it through high school and college.

I do think that’s what is being implied. The logic being it’s easy to outspend everyone else when you’re the only one paying. Not saying it’s what has occurred but that’s the theory and the logic behind it.
