re: Will Baker’s Defense finally be able to stop a mobile QB?

Bakers defenses are too aggressive against mobile qbs. Miami isnt a good comparison though, their defense, specifically the line crushed almost everyone, they were elite. Baker needs to prove his defense can defend in multiple ways, including without bringing a ton of pressure outside the front 4. Pressure by blitzing mobile QBs will get you killed when you play alot of man
We played a lot of zone vs mobile QBs last year. A major issue was that our LBs and Secondary never played very well in it. We also dropped 7 of 8 plenty, but the front 4 never got pressure after Reliford went down early in the season. We had to play some man and we never had anyone play well as a spy vs mobile QBs. Whit was slowed by injury or out, Keys was too slow and Perkins just had absolutely no IQ for the role. If your zone is shaky, you don’t have a reliable spy, and your front 4 struggles to get mobile QBs on the ground, these become major issues to try and work around.
There are only so many weak spots you can scheme around. The defense was frankly full of them in 2024. Last year was better from a talent perspective, bur we still didn’t have enough difference makers on defense. There were two in the secondary in Delane and Halsey, but the other Safety spot was just ok, and our DL just didn’t have enough talent to affect games. Losing Reliford and having Weeks injured or out all of last year really hurt. Perkins not adjusting to the new role (again) was also an issue.
Baker’s defense had a couple of rough outings last year. However, he also turned in a 23rd ranked scoring defense playing in support of an offense that couldn’t take any pressure off of them. That ranking is probably higher than the overall level of the defense without Reliford and a full speed Weeks.
With the talent that’s been plugged in on the DL, LB and Safety, we should be in good shape as long as we keep the CBs healthy. That Anding injury really hurt. But some strides really do have to be made this year because of the upgrade in overall talent and depth.

Which games was this a problem for the defense BEFORE they got gassed from a 3 and out offense?
You can't ignore this variable.
quote:Really?
The first 40 offensive plays for Ole Miss were essentially negative yardage against that defense.
Ole Miss went 3 and out on their 1st two possessions, LSU had a TD drive and was up 7-0.
Ole Miss' 3rd possession was 18 plays for 83 yds, we did finally hold to a FG.
Oh, and Vanderbilt-
1st possession 9 plays, TD
2nd possession 14 playd, TD
So that's straight out of the chute, marching up and down the field on us.
Nobody was gassed in either situation, we just couldn't get off the field.

Make the DTQB throw.
A pass provides 3 outcomes, only one of which is good for the offense.
No matter how good the passing game has become, this is still a constant variable.
By pressuring any passer -DTQBs included- the probability of the one positive outcome for the offense can be decreased.
Obviously, need jimmys and joes to execute the Xs and Os, but the odds favor an 11-on-11 scheme for the D.
Disclaimer: I note that coaches have never knocked on my door asking for advice on this matter, ever…

Its one of the 3 questions this team has to answer but you can't until the season starts.
And for everyone saying "Whit was hurt" as a reason why we struggled. Then you have forgotten Whit led the SEC in tackles in '24 and we still struggled with stopping a running QB. Go back and look at the South Carolina game in '24 if Sellers doesn't get hurt we likely lose that game. He gashed us on runs including at 75 yd td run. Bama embarrassed us running the QB lmfao.
Blake also struggled with it back to his days at Mizzou. This has been one of his biggest weaknesses. No one can answer it until the season starts.

What DC doesn't struggle against a mobile quarterback?
Other teams managed to not make Jalen Milroe look superhuman back to back years.

The verdict is still uncertain regarding Baker; his defense has not performed well since he joined LSU. They have struggled to stop both mobile quarterbacks and stationary ones. Hopefully, he has worked on these issues. I am tired of the numerous excuses that fans have made for him.

Chavis the DC when we completely shut down Lamar Jackson in the bowl game?
That was Aranda’s first season as DC

Johnny Football and Jalen Hurts had career bad days vs LSU.
As did Lamar Jackson. Marcel Reed is not that good you would think we could figure it out, but then again we all knew that Milroe was gonna run and we still let him.

That is the $40 million dollar question!

We had a lot more talent overall back then. Including an offense that could move the ball at least somewhat

Kind of amazing the talent decline at each level of the defense. Cannot set the edge. Cannot pressure QB. Cannot stop QB power. Or Zone read either. Other than Perkins freshman year we have not been able to pressure the QB against good team for at least five years

Hopefully practicing against Kiffin/Leavitt will be somewhat more helpful than Sloan/Nuss in that regard.
I thought about this when we hired Kiffin. It can only help the defense, right?
Iron sharpens iron sort of thing. They played against a terrible OL, a slow developing offense, with a QB that couldn't move well or throw hard last year in practice.

Jamal Adams was awesome that game. Basically shadowed Lamar.

I feel like Kiffin giving Weis some autonomy with the offense will allow him to help in this regard. I think he'd know very well what an offense with a mobile QB hates to play against. I see the Baker-Kiffin relationship being very beneficial to each of them in terms of playcalling.

LSU played more man than they did zone, that’s why when the qb would scramble no one would be in the area, also that’s why LSU always had a LB 15-20 yards down the field in coverage. When LSU played zone it was because the Dline was able to create pressure. Vs Ole Miss played man, vs A&M played man and started a true nickle as the base defense, Vandy played man.

I think people forget ‘24 season happened, like we didn’t witness going to college station getting gashed vs Reed

Which is why it cannot be answered until the season is here. And we likely won't have the answer until play Chambliss and Marcel Reed. I just want to see our defense actually not be outflanked or out manned in pre-snap alignment.

I do think some LSU fans overrate his two years as DC. Much of it because he came in after the 2023 debacle. But it's a bit much to say his defenses have not performed well since he joined LSU. LSU was 28th nationally in total defense and 24th in scoring defense last season. Not "elite". But not bad either.
Barring something surprising, this should be the best offense he's been paired with at LSU. We'll see how things look with that being the case
