If you need a refresher, just watch the 2001 SECCG when a little known player named Matt Mauk came into the game after a cheap shot took out Davey. Watch how Matt was able to quickly stabilize that UT Defense with the same play over and over and over
ETA: Also, Chavis' scheme against JF was ultimately used by NFL teams to get him out of the league pretty quickly.

Baker hasn’t really impressed as DC but he has improved the defense every year. This year he’s has the most talent & depth throughout the center field so we should see an improved defense across all metrics.
He does give me 3rd and Chavis vibes though. What’s really weird is in some games he makes very good 2nd half adjustments and other games he seems to get hyper conservative. For example, he will run stunts or twists with delayed blitz and then go hyper conservative.
I’ve been very disappointed with his development & cohesiveness of the front 7. I also don’t really feel confident we will see a Q4 stop in the big gamewhen we need it from him.That’s just my opinion.

Every team struggles against mobile QBs. Shoot, look at what Plumlee did to us in 2019

It’s very, very simple. It comes down to overall talent, which the defense had fairly little of after the utter collapse in 23. Guys like Swinson, Weeks (when healthy), Delane, Alexander, Woodland, and Halsey have all thrived in his system, but they all have legit SEC talent.
Now look at the REST of the defense the last 3 seasons. Look up front the last 2 years- a whole lot of good to average inside 2 years ago and across the front 4 last year. 0 difference makers up front. Look at Safety and Penn at LB 2 years ago- not even close to SEC level. The CBs other than Zy 2 years ago- freshmen or not good enough.
We’ve been getting by on a lot of very average to frankly below average players by top SEC standards on defense, bolstered by a few very good ones and a decent scheme. But top offenses in this conference overcome scheme. You must have the talent to win on that side of the ball. This is by far the highest overall talent level we’ve had on defense since Baker got here, but even now we still have thin spots at DB and DE due to injuries.
If you want to knock the overall defensive recruiting, that’s valid. Now it’s improved dramatically over the last two years in both HS and the portal, but let’s be honest- that’s more about getting the money situation right than Baker or his staff in today’s world.

Yeah, having slow as hell Penn in the middle, Perkins looking absolutely lost most of the time (before getting hurt), and playing 2 of the worst Safeties in the SEC really helped us defending mobile QBs in 24.
If this is who you are relying on to make the right reads and get guys on the ground, then there’s a ceiling on what any DC can accomplish. Thankfully the talent situation is better now, so the results need to follow.

We actually did a better job pressuring the QB last year. The major issue was getting mobile QBs on the ground. We had a bunch of solid guys who played their roles, but we didn’t have guys who could finish off those plays in the backfield.
Reliford showed flashes before he got hurt, but we don’t know what he would have looked like vs a better offense, because it turned out that Clemson sucked.
I definitely agree with you about overall talent level. It REALLY bottomed out in 23 and it’s been a long climb to get back to some level of stability.

LMFAO so a DC having issues with mobile QBs before he was our DC and during and its the players fault not his.

Baker, so far, seems to be a 1 scheme guy. Man coverage and heavy pass rush. Upfield pressure.
I haven't seen him adjust to try to contain if someone beats the pressure.
