This. Shaq had the supporting cast, but Brown did not know how to put all the pieces together.

frankly they didn't play defense at times... had a lot of head scratching moments.

definitely think a John Brady would've been ideal for this squad. his teams wore you out defensively, he just didn't have the elite talent offensively like this crew

Dale didn't use the "Freak Defense" enough in the tourney.

Dale made a comment I think that he had enough talent he didn’t need to use the freak defense - no need for gimmicks. In actuality, if the freak defense works for less talented teams, it would work as well or better with more talented teams. Dale (or Tex Winter) knew how to coach lesser talent. He did not know how to contain/coach great talent.

That said, the Dale years were awesome for the most part. Lots of fun. At one point, if memory serves, I think he had the most consecutive NCAA tournament appearances at that time. 11 or so. We would love to repeat his success.

????

Geert I'm sure you mean, was almost unplayable at that point of his career, he got much better later.

Vernel Singleton was on that team much more fits your narrative.

Or Maurice Williamson, he was very talented.

Obviously Dale Brown could recruit, but was clueless, just as Bobby Knight asserted, about championship level coaching.

he couldn't hit free throws. remember Hack a Shaq? he became a liability late in the 4th quarter. I love Shaq, and I firmly believe if he could've shot at least 80 per cent from the free throw line he would've been the greater Center ever in the pros. You needed him in the game but they would just foul him.

I get what you are saying about Dale Brown. He made his share of bad coaching on the sidelines. Still, with Chris and Shaq in the lineup at the same time, they would've been unbeatable if Shaq could've hit some free throws.

Yeah, but they really didn't start doing that his freshman year.

It’s not even that we didn’t win a Championship with Shaq that bothers me, it’s the fact we never got past the round of 32 with arguably a Top 10 player in the league of all time and a Top 3 Center.

We even had Stanley and Chris at the time.

Mind Boggling

Not to mention Singleton, Sims, Williamson and Boudreaux. One solid team (although young) that could finish no better than the Round of 32 (22-9 overall record). That season, and the next two, were extremely disappointing, and it all fell back on Dale. His coaching acumen was gone by that time.

Hack a Shaq. He couldn’t make a free throw.

Shaq should because Dale saw what was in him before everyone else. Dale told Shaq to go to NBA as soon as he was elgible.

Because winning a Natty in basketball is insanely difficult and requires not only a great team but at least a little bit of good luck in March.

Coincidentally Knight and Indiana were the last opponent Shaq faced while wearing an LSU uniform. 2nd round loss 89-79

Shaq’s stat line
36 points
12 rebounds
5 blocks
2 steals
12-18 from the field
12-12 from the FT line (not a typo or mistake) he made all 12 of his free throws in that game.

I used to question this for years. When LSU landed the twin towers, I thought we would be unbeatable. I'm thinking that any rare miss by Chris Jackson would be rebounded and slammed home by Shaq or Stanley.....but the rest is history.

Shaq was really raw. Stanley Roberts was the more talented big man at that time but he was not very motivated. Mahmoud Abdul Rauf talks about trying to get Roberts motivated. Even Dale Brown, the master motivator, wasn't able to do it.

Shaq was neutralized by the officials and their failure to call fouls.

Dale
this is the correct answer.

In 1989-90, Dale had these guys:

Chris Jackson
Stanley Roberts
Shaq
Maurice Williamson
Vernel Singleton
Wayne Sims
and other solid role players.

With that lineup, Dale couldn't even win the SEC or make it out of the second round of the Dance.
