re: Why do you think Shaq didn’t win a Natty at LSU?

That’s overblown. Dales the 3rd winningest coach in SEC history.
It’s not overblown. Dale Brown had undisciplined teams, and undisciplined teams tend to fold under pressure.

86-87 had N.Wilson, Anthony Wilson, Jose Vargas and Woodside and Oliver and Daryl Joe on the point. Once that team came together they were hard to beat. Blanton was hurt that year and did not play . If he was healthy, he might have been the difference because he was defensive demon
Yeah, I confused the ‘86 Final Four team a bit with the ‘87 Elite 8 one. The ‘86 team had a bit more talent with Williams and Redden. The ‘87 one is the team that had no business going as far as they did. ‘86 looked that way because of their shitty record coming into the Tourney. They were pretty loaded, but dealt with some shite during the year like the chicken pox deal. Yet another aspect of Dale’s enigma.

I remember that season well. This was during an era when the top teams had returning players for their third and fourth years. Shaq was a true freshman and was not as much of an offensive threat as he would later become. Stanley was a redshirt freshman and was pretty good for a redshirt freshman.. The bottom line is that team had not yet had time to gel into the team it could have become if they had stayed together for 3 years.
I would make an argument that the 84-85 team was the most talented and deepest team Dale had - with a good mix of youth and experience. The Shaq/CJ/Stanley team was had more raw top end talent but that 84-85 team was deeper and more balanced in talent and experience.
Blanton, Ollie Brown, Dennis Brown, Jerry Reynolds, Don Redden, Derrick Taylor, John Williams, Jose Vargas, Nikita Wilson, Anthony Wilson, Damon Vance, Ocie Conley and Joe Johnson.
The team finished 19-10 and 13-5 in the SEC winning the conference, but lost in the quarters of the SEC tourney then got bounced unceremoniously as a 4-seed by David Robinson and Navy by 25 points in the first round.
In fact, after that year and the year before when we lost to Dayton in disappointing fashion with another talent-laden team Dale was starting to get a rep for underachieving, he had lost in the first round at home in the NIT to Tulane and UNO in embarrassing fashion the previous two years to the Dayton loss.
The two year run in 86 and 87 to the Final Four and elite 8 reversed that trend, but after that Dale never made it past the second round of the tourney, losing in the first round 4 of the last 6 times Dale's teams made the tourney.

The teams that won the title during Shaq's career were UNLV and Duke. Even if LSU were to advance past the Sweet 16 in those years, ain't no one was beating those two teams.

Because they didn't have a great coach.

They had 3 7 footers. Geert was also on the 89-90 team. I remember seeing a game with all 3 on the court at once. Geert ended up being a first round pick as well. I believe he is still coaching in Romania now

I wonder how many posters in this thread actually watched games during Shaqs playing time at LSU?

I did. All of them, well at least all of the home games. I was in school at the time. LSU had the talent to win it all. What they did not have was an “in game” coach. Dale was terrible.

He couldn't hit free throws.

Dale Brown.
But then, Olajuwon and Sampson didn’t win either.

it's funny how fans say this yet he was one of the winningest coaches in SEC. What about when we made it to the final 4 in 81 and 86. Sure 81 was loaded with talent but 86 had Blanton as our center

e was always praised for his freak defense...i guess that was bad coaching.
it would have driven me nuts as an opposing fan but the way we ran that four corner offense was beautiful

I know that used to piss off other teams, we ran it so well we often ended up scoring out of it even that wasn't the main objective

I don’t feel like reading this whole thread, but the main reason Shaq didn’t win the NC is because teams were fricking stacked back then. He only played one year with CJ and look at who they lost to in the NCAAT, and who subsequently won the NCCAT. If people can’t wrap their brains around that then there is no hope for them.

We actually beat UNLV that year in the regular season, but yeah we'd have lost to them in the tourney on a neutral court.
