All of the following outstanding players were ib the team at the same time, and they didn't win a championship........AMAZING!!!!! SHAQUEL ONEAL STANLEY ROBERTS CHRIS JACKSON GEERT HAMMICK

For 1 year where Shaq was a lanky freshman with no offensive game who fouled a lot
Shaq 3 years later was a totally different player

There was no 1 and done back then so teams had 3 and 4 years elite players

With that lineup, Dale couldn't even win the SEC or make it out of the second round of the Dance.

That team finished tied for 2nd in the SEC, one game behind 1st place Georgia, who LSU lost to 2x by a COMBINED 3 points. That team had some notable wins that season: UNLV (national runner up), Loyola Marymount, Notre Dame in the Superdome. Unfortunately, they ran into a really good Georgia Tech team in the NCAA Tournament - who would reach the Final Four - and lost by 3. It was one of those unfortunate NCAAT matchups where LSU ran into a really good, and more importantly, hot (12-2 in last 14 games going into the tournament). Of course, LSU surrendered a 17 point first half lead.

Jackson was LSU's lead dog that year, not O'Neal. And he had a really bad game by his standards.

Dale, put LSU on the basketball map, like Bertman did for Baseball. Both sports had no interest to fans when they came to LSU. The difference was, Basketball was an extremely competitive college sport when Dale came to Baton Rouge.

That era had better teams, less room for error

This is the right answer. If you grew up watching college basketball in that era, you know how many amazing rosters there were.

That team beat Villanova in the first round then lost to Ga Tech in the 2nd round. Mo Williamson missed a 3 at the buzzer that would have tied the game. Jackson had the flu & didn't play very well. Tech made like 18 three pointers. Shaq & Stanley didn't guard on the perimeter so Tech often had guts wide open shooting 3s. LSU blew like an 18 point lead in the game.

yes, we did not play particularly well but we had a much better team so we won fairly comfortably.

Tech was a good team with some talent, Kenny Anderson one could argue had a better NBA career than CJ....Scott was a good catch and shoot guy that hung around the NBA for a while. But I do think overall we had more talent and blowing that 18-point lead still bothers me - no adjustments when they adjusted. And it wasn't like Bobby Cremins had a great X and O reputation either - he kinda had a similar recruiter/motivator rep as Dale.

But a big issue for me was we were a 5-seed and that's the reason we had to play that good a team in the second round. We should never have been seeded that poorly but we lost some games we hand no business losing like to a mediocre Auburn team and a couple of others.

With the talent we had, you can call Shaq raw if you want but the dude was still a force unlike anything anyone else had even as raw as he was.....should have been a 2 seed at minimum.

It wasn't Dale's coaching acumen was gone , it's that Tex was gone

My memory says he missed a driving 8’ shot.

Tex coached here one year - we underachieved in relation to our talent that year I thought and lost to Dayton in the first round as a pretty sizable favorite and a 4-seed.

The best team was 89-90 when he was a freshman. And even though we beat them in the PMAC in January no one was beating UNLV in March. Also, I don’t think people realize this but he was only 17 most of that year, he was very raw, he was not the Shaq he became in the NBA. It was a different world when most top players like Shaq himself stayed at least 3 years in college. That dominant UNLV team all came back. LSU was talented but young in a world where experienced teams were common. If Jackson/Abu Raif and Roberts stayed/remained eligible for 2 more years i don’t know they beat those Duke teams but maybe make a Final Four. But his last 2 years the team weren’t very good.

Shaq was a terrible FT shooter and he would be mauled every game, and, back then, a foul was just a foul, not the different levels we have today.

Egregious hack-a-Shaq would have resulted in FTs and the ball.

Dale Brown was the Les Miles of basketball. Could recruit but not great at X’s and O’s.

Bum Phillips made it his own with his Beaumont accent when talking about Bear Bryant

Bobby Knight coaching > Dale Brown coaching. .

It wasn’t just Knight. With the amazing talent we had on those Shaq teams, we tied for 1 regular season SEC championship and won zero SEC tournaments.

Dale Brown was a bit of a joke as head coach (see Bob Knight comment).

The problem with that game is, Knight should have been kicked out of the game or at least given a technical for his tantrum at the scorer’s table and would have probably closed Indiana out if the refs would have had the balls to do their job against that a-hole.
