Dan Lanning was hired in that cycle, probably wasn’t even on Woodward’s radar.

Dan Lanning
but that does not fit the Scott Woodward methodology

At the time I was happy with Kelly.
With 20/20 hindsight- Kiffin.

Yep, no one could have predicted Kiffin becoming his best self on and off the field; he has literally changed his lifestyle for the better.
He had started that at FAU. If he had not, no way Arkansas and OM would’ve offered him in 21.

Dan Lanning was hired by Oregon Mike Elko was hired by Duke Kalen DeBoer was hired by Washington Brent Venables was hired by Oklahoma Marcus Freeman was promoted by ND Sonny Dykes was hired by TCU Rhett Lashlee was hired by SMU Joey McGuire was hired by Texas Tech I’m not including Cristobal because LSU was never going to beat out Miami.
Of this list I believe the best fit would have been Lanning.
Revisionist history says any number of them would have been great here, but this is why the fans would not have been ok with the initial hire or why they would have been skeptical and possibly upset to pay the so buyout:
Mike Elko had never been a HC before and was a defensive guy
Deboer hadn’t had his success at Washington yet, had no ties to the south, and recruiting was still more of the old way than it is today
Venerables was never a HC, LSU fans remembered 2019 torching his defense, and he was a defensive guy
Freeman had never been a HC and was only at ND for one year. The only reason he was hired as HC that cycle was that we stole BK from ND
Any Dykes was not a big enough name for the majority of the fanbase and outside of the 2021 season, is he someone you want leading LSU?
Same with Lashlee. I view him very similar to Chad Morris and feel like
He’s struck lightning in the bottle with their current qb
I know nothing of McGuire before TTU, but wasn’t he on the hot seat coming into the season for lack of success and the only reason they are doing well is they bought a top tier Big12 team?

I'm tired of reading this shite. No it wasn't unless you count winning the press conference a homerun hire. Hiring the guy that appeases the fanbase is not a homerun. Elko or Lanning would've been homeruns, the rant just didn't know it.

Lanning was never coming to LSU.
Why? He was the DC at UGA right? What’s his connection to Oregon?

Cig and Elko were HC’s prior to Indiana and aTm, but you’re correct about overlooking qualified candidates just because they haven’t been a P4 HC before.

Most people didn't know about that. Give me a break.
What?
That was a major story and was all over ESPN etc. if you followed college football at the time you heard about it
I’m not even blaming BK and I went out of my way to not word it that way.

Elko had no HC experience during LSU last coaching search so he would been immediately off the search list.

Probably way more upside than Kiffin, Lea, Key, and those types. They should get interviews, but odds are that not all 3 of them will be hits. This is where an AD earns his money

Lane is hindsight.
LSU fans and especially the Rant would explode when Lane decided to Lane (going for it when he should've kicked the FG)! He lost the LSU game and several other games by "Laneing".
He has done it way less this year than in the past

So should we go after another home run hire as we like to say or a proven coordinator or lesser coach with something to prove?
The logical answer here is that it's a crap shoot. There's no such thing as a "home run" hire in terms of guaranteed success.
Every hire has question marks:
Young up-and-coming head coach at a smaller school may be a flash in the pan (Tom Herman, Billy Napier)
Proven coordinator may not have the chops to be HC (Aranda, Venables)
Don't necessarily know what you mean by "lesser" coach with something to prove, but lets assume you mean successful coach at smaller school may not be able to win big when expectations are big.
Every avenue comes with uknowns. And with the way college football operates today, there's even more uncertainty. You just have to hope they find a good candidate. As long as the resume is solid, I'll be able to talk myself into believing it could be good hire the same way I did with Kelly.

Kelly had taken ND to the BCS Championship Game. He had taken them to the CFP in 2018, again in 2020, and had ND 11-1 with an outside chance of returning to the CFP for the second straight year (3rd time overall) at the time the accepted the LSU.
Given guys like Smart, Saban and Dabo at the time weren't going to leave for LSU, there were only two other guys, Riley and Kelly, in the prior 5 years who had such success. By all accounts Riley chose USC. That left Kelly.
If in December of 2021 LSU had hired Dan Lanning and LSU fans found out Kelly wanted the job, but was passed over, this board would have gone apoplectic. LSU hired Georgia's DC who had never been a HC when they could have had a guy who was 44-6 over the last 4 years with two CFP appearances!!!!!

Out of the one's considered, should have been Lincoln Riley.
Out of the one's that weren't considered, should have been Lane Kiffen.
