They call Leavitt a modern scrambler.
Watch him run sideways, dodging the rush, keeping the play alive until the end.
It is the ghost of Fran Tarkenton, alive again on Saturday nights.
True grit never dies. It only changes jerseys.

Who does Sam Leavitt remind you of as a college QB?
Oregon Bo Nix
Nix had like 10 rushing TDs one year at Oregon and really blossomed as passer out West.
In 2021 when Auburn came to BR, LSU was ahead like 10-0 and Nix was scrambling for his life one play before finding an open receiver for a TD.
Then Leavitt basically had the same play against Ole Miss, except his pass went for a 1st down to Winnie Watkins.
Pretty identical plays.

He is a typical above-average college QB. He is really good, but not amazing.

Like Joe Burrow in his first season at LSU? Or maybe even Jayden Daniels his first season at LSU?
and got progressively better throughout that first season.

I HATE the Baker Mayfield comparison. Leavitt is so much more athletic than Baker as a runner

Perhaps ask again after Sam Leavitt has fully developed into who Sam Leavitt is going to be.

Physically? Bert Jones (the OG #7)
bert was much bigger. a hard nosed contact-seeking runner when he did, and had one of the biggest arms football has ever seen

Why Gus Frerotte?
Actually Gus Frerotte was a darn good QB who was tough as nails and went above and beyond the call of duty on occasions (he was darn lucky he didn't die that time he went head first into a concrete endzone barrier)! He suffered an image problem, just because of his somewhat awkward, non-alliterative name.

Right handed Steve Young with better measurables but not quite as good at playing the position.
I think you're spot on
And let's keep in mind, "not quite as good at playing the position" ...
Steve Young went to Tampa Bay, then had to go to the USFL to develop, then sat behind Montana a few years. He was still raw as hell coming out of college.

I'd say he reminds me of Sam Leavitt

That is the question, right? Is he at his ceiling, or will he continue to progress? Its not a knock on Sam. Everyone has a ceiling.

That ASU qb who took them to the playoff a couple years ago.

His arm is way bigger than Manziel and he is fsster.
The way Leavitt runs does remind me of Johnny Football. He runs at full speed and full force and is not afraid to get hit at all. He might be a tiny bit faster than Johnny, but Johnny was fast and a phenomenal runner. Dude averaged 7 ypc his freshman year and had 1,400 yards rushing and 21 rushing TDs (led the SEC).
The way Leavitt is looking passing the ball right now looks like he could have significantly more potential as a passes that Johnny F, but we'll see how he does against Bama, Texas and Tenn.
