Across the street from Valley Park.

Prime Location
This and similar positive comments are made for all of the many failed developments in East Baton Rouge. There needs to be a realistic recalibration. Those sites are not prime anymore and may never be again unless development of undeveloped land becomes severely restricted, a political solution that politicians will never make.
Maybe a network of pocket data centers with pocket nuclear power plants could consume the sub-prime inventory of decay? Go to it Governor.

there is no master plan that can survive or endure the assault of urban culture that eventually makes its way into every "nice" area. Many of the strip malls that now blight BR were once decent retail centers. I'll let you guess why they turned to shite.

Just bring back the Happy Note in a new safe location.

Louisiana is in desperate need of competent Mixed-use Master Plan developers, including proper RDE projects (retail, dining and entertainment). We suffer from the never-ending strip mall
No thank you. That would just give us hideous “luxury apartments” every like Nashville and Charlotte

I can, and speak about this frequently. Canal street is a continued missed opportunity, along with Port NOLA, lack of a theatre district, and a more developed sports and entertainment district (dome and SKA area).
have you seen what Ball Arena and the Kroenke folks announced there? Place is going to be bad arse. We easily could have done something cooler around the dome but, again, no. Nola really could be a gold mine if we stopped shooting ourselves in the foot.

at one time, that center had Hooters, Clicks, Sullivans, Fox and Hound, melting pot, and Poets/Glens Bombay. Not sure if they were all operating at the same time but it had to be close. In the late 80s, early 00s, that area was jumping.
Also, there was a Ruby Tuesday in the parking lot at the corner of College and Corporate.

Before Poets there was a restaurant called Screaming Coyote. It was wild. $1 margaritas were an insane experience especially for a college kid

remember in the 80's -90's the interior was a small mall with some nice clothing stores (Todd Garland, RFD, Benneton)...is there anything inside that building anymore?
Haven’t thought about that in a long time. My mom worked at Gilhe’s back in the 80’s/90’s. Iirc it was an upscale men’s clothing store.

Did the one on Perkins shut down?

I still have a shirt from Gilhe’s, it’s held up well.
The tag says “Gilhe’s at The Square” from the corporate square mall name days

The thing that really needs dealing with is that row of trap houses and trashy empty lots on the College Dr service road b/w I-10 and Wendy’s.

Back in the 90’s, the massive office complex in the center was Premier Bank/Bank One’s Lending and Collection center. I worked there until they shut it down going into the 2000’s, if I remember right. Met my wife in that building. Been married for 27 years.

At one point they had a brewery in there too. Huge copper kettles. Can’t remember the name didn’t last long. And the Happy Note on Perkins closed I’m guessing 15 + years ago.

Corporate Mall back-in-the-day. My sister worked at I.H. Rubensteins in the 1970's. There was also a Bert's Record Store and Steinberg's in the mall. The whole development should be demolished.

I had some great times at Paparazzi's & Center Stage back in the day

There was a Business Report story on them probably 10, 15 years ago. One owner’s last name is Hartley, the other’s is Vey… I.e. the same guys that gave money to Shaw for the theater, among other charitable ventures in town.
It was a really great article but spent a lot of time on how secretive they are. Supposedly they haven’t been photographed in well over 30 years. They’re recluses or something.
Anybody have any info on that? What happened to Hartley/Vey? Pretty mysterious.

The best thing about Essen lane was the relatively short lived Times restaurant across the street from OLOL. Best burgers in town around 2010 perhaps only bested by Curbside Food Truck. (Which, by the way, is that food truck still around?)

You are right. I think it was called Capital City Brewery.
Come to think of it, there have been several things there since Glens Bombay Club
